MSI vs Sapphire [7970]

Thread Starter
I'm looking into getting another 7970, I know the lightning is considered the best out there and there's a premium price tag of around $100 as of now. Looking at the reviews it doesn't seem to overclock any better especially on the memory. Is there any reason that I should buy the MSI over the Sapphire? I might have answered my own question but maybe I over looked something.

Either/or will work just as fine. My personal preference is to try to get either matching cards from the same company or as close as possible. The Sapphire should be just as fine but without that premium hopefully. Plus should look cleaner than having 2 different cards.

Mine as well typically but i figured their might be something else considering the price difference aand the reputatio. It carries.

They both are good companies. I always go with Sapphire when I buy AMD, not really sure why, but they have always been good to me & their cards are awesome.

MSI on the other hand do thier RMA's by serial so.. if you ever want to sell your card the 2nd owner can RMA the card if something ever happens. Sapphire on the other hand doesn't work that way, Warranty is non-transferable. You would need to do the RMA for the 2nd owner.

I would go with Sapphire.

For me, I prefer MSI smile.gif from Nvidia (460, 560Ti, 570) and to ATI (7870), overclocking performance is really satisfying me thumb.gif It just TF fan are abit noisy when begins to hit 70%.

If i could afford it id get the MSI Lightning simply because it's the highest clocked out of the box but if i had to pick up one now within my budget it be the Sapphire 7970 Dual X OC wich prolly has the best cooler out of all the 7970's ; http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4599/sapphire_radeon_hd_7970_dual_x_3gb_oc_video_card_review/index.html

That cooler notes down some unheard results for noise and temps, pretty crazy.

Another interresting card at least for me would be this: VTX3D 7970 X-Edition

It's clocked slightly lower than the Lightning (1050 vs 1070) and does 1 or 2 fps less on average in games but it's a whole lot cheaper. The cooler isn't the best but it does a good job nonethless.

Out of the box performance doesn't matter, I thought the Lightning had different phase/vrm setup. Overclockability is what I care about.

In that case id go with the Sapphire Dual X, several reviewers have mentioned that the Lightning does not go further than reference cards.

You need to find MSI R7970 Lightning's review smile.gif to see it by your self about its performance in overclocking or try to find (if possible exist) 7970lightning club thread and see what they say.
I think Lightning series are great in terms of overclocking... Just imagine 16pwm vs 6pwm (reference) wink.gif stability should be better with Lightning series.

Lightning = do not want for me. The only reason I would entertain one over a ref card is for running 3D eyefinity do to the DP port arrangement. Otherwise the Sapph 7970 OC kills the Lightning imo.

This urban legend that the Lightning is somehow superior needs to end. Overclocking is about the quality of the silicon and MSI DO NOT BIN FOR OVERCLOCKING. It's not about eh VRMs it's about the silicon. It's all about you and the silicon lottery.
