looks fine except for the micro atx board... see if you can find a standard atx one for a few bucks more

This eliminates any upgrade path to Ivy though. Just saying.

My reasoning with going for the mATX board came after talking to the guy I'm making it for today. He basically said he just wants something to last a year or two before he gets a job and has a some income (he just graduated from his university this past weekend), at which point he will sell this entire rig and buy a new one from scratch. As he isn't going to need more than 2 sticks of RAM or one video card (and he's going to use onboard audio), I don't see the need for a full-sized board. Of course, I guess I'd better be sure that the case he picks has the current hardware for mounting an mATX.

Also, do you thing a 450W psu could handle the current configuration?

( I switched out the RAM for 1333 Mhz, which is what the board can handle, with less latency and betters timings for the same price.)

That mobo is a micro atx. You won't get the performance out of your parts that you are getting with that board. You need to cut back in other areas other then your mobo. You could go for a cheaper cpu and get a better cooling solution and oc it for about the same performance. Also you could change your gpu to a Nvidia 550 ti. That is a great budget card nowadays.

Also are you set on intel? This may sound weird (because this is the intel forums) But you could go AMD and save quite a bit. You also said the guy is just going to sell it so really it won't matter that much.

These are great budget parts:

I'm not sure that's the case. Though the chip sets on some mATX boards might be a little less powerful, I think the main difference is size (and the inherent loss of features and cooling ability). For instance, http://www.overclock.net/t/1240401/atx-vs-matx-which. Can anyone else corroborate this?

As for the CPU, from what I've seen in my research, the i3 2120 scales very well in games as compared to the 965, but of course can;t take advantage of the extra threads in some games. Considering the price isn't all that different (especially considering the i3 can be had cheaper elsewhere on the web), I think I'll stick with the i3. As for the 550 ti, I'm keeping it away with a 10-foot pole. rolleyes.gif
