I think AMD is the way to go for the $400 price range since all the intel processors are pretty pricey. Anyways, I'm stuck between AM2 or 939. which is better?

*by the way, I will be running PATA HDD as the primary and IDE DVD Drive... these two I already have*

This computer will mainly be used for internet, word processing, and light gaming such as World of Warcraft.

Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
Here: 80$ after rebate. Ram is another 100$. No keyboard/mouse/CDrom??

going am2 right now is for the sole purpose of upgrading in the future. if your getting a 400 dollar computer now go 939. AM2 is trying to futrue proof ( quad core nonsense and yes i say nonsense )

BigPoppa, when you own a dual core you will see how amazing it is over a single core, I cant even imagine what Quad-core will be like. It's hardly nonsense.

I'd go with the AM2 definatly, S939 is old technology so why put money into it?

I actually just built the system in my signature for $400. I bought only the parts you're looking for. My 512MB of ram and the video card aren't too great, but the processor, mobo, case and PSU are (Antec SLK 1650B). You could definitely build a cheap and good system around an ASUS A8N-E board and a Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego like I did.

Edit - current newegg prices (cheaper than when I bought them)

Athlon 64 3700+ boxed - $93
ASUS A8N-E motherboard - $79
Antec SLK 1650B case with Antec smart power PSU - 65$

this leaves you $163 left over to pick some good RAM and whatever video card you can afford and you're in business

I have another question. Which of these two processor would be better as a all around performer.

AMD Athlon 64 San Diego 3700+ 2.2Ghz Single-Core $93.00
or
Intel Pentium D 805 2.66Ghz Dual-Core: $95.00

If you overclock it, either of those chips will blaze through things with ease. However, not sure if the fact that the 805 is Dual Core could make up for the 3 GHz that's possible on a good 3700.

4 GHz (potentially) Dual Core Intel

or

3 GHz (again, potentially) Single Core AMD...

Really not sure which would win that battle, wait for someone with more experience.

Research the MB well if you go with an 805 or you won't be OCing very well!
