[VC] NVIDIA To Recall all GeForce GTX 600 Series Cards - Page 9

That will never happen, that will cause a big lawsuit, it amuses me that a rumor starts and then people start adding their own rumours. Until NVIDIA comfirms this, then we have nothing to worry about. If this is indeed true, we will all get new video cards from the recall. No matter what, we will always win. If they DO rebrand the cards and change the names, then they will be in trouble because we are not getting our original product.

Maybe they finally realized that having GTX 670's @ 1.3ghz and +500 memory oc is crazy and they want them back. They have to kill me to get my card back biggrin.gif

Could it be that nvidia needed something to compete with the 7970, and therefore ramped up these cards? Seeing as big kepler wasn't ready yet (and won't be for a while)? Bah, who knows. I don't care.

A corporation will only do a recall if the problem is really a big problem. So yes, even a rumor about a recall is something to think about. They haven't done so well the past couple of fiscal quarters, if its true you can bet they won't make it public until the very last possible second.

failure, yes. catastrophic failure? maybe, depends on what nvidia management decides after crunching the numbers (assuming it is degradation that leads to failures)

if the gpu provided some bad feedback that blew power supplies, then that could be cause for recall. hard drive failures would be catastrophic. pcie connection blowing up that damaged motherboards, would be catastrophic.

if the gpu just stopped working, just the gpu would be broken. nvidia may or may not do a recall after crunching numbers and seeing how often it happens.

Yup. Same goes for software. Diablo 3 for example.

Let it mature and the bugs get ironed out before being their guinea pig.

Plus, it'll be cheaper too. Win/Win.

As for this rumor, if true, it's good Nvidia are doing this. It'll be a pita and a massive inconvenience for the customer and Nvidia, but in the end, the customer will win. Personally though, i've always gone AMD/Radeon.

According to Pnosker, a leak from chip producer TSMC says that NVIDIA might be recalling all GeForce Kepler based cards. GeForce GTX 600 Series may be suffering from performance degradation caused by long periods of heavy load. That’s the second problem with whole GTX 600 Series lineup, as we are already familiar with Adaptive V-Sync technology causing stuttering problems.

Quote:
We have received reports of an intermittent v-sync stuttering issue from some of our customers. We’ve root caused the issue to a driver bug and identified a fix for it. The fix requires extensive testing though, and will not be available until our next major driver release targeted for June (post-R300). For users experiencing this issue, the interim workaround is to disable v-sync via the Nvidia Control Panel or in-game graphics settings menu.

A few quick comments: our source has been accurate with some prior information but this is the first time we are citing something said about GPUs. Let’s just wait and see. Hopefully this isn’t true as I my new computer coming in will feature dual GTX 680 cards along with a GTX 580. Additionally, it’s interesting reading the commentary throughout the web regarding this story. Firstly, I am not shorting this stock. I hold no interests in any tech companies. Some commentary has stated the lack of relation between this and Intel’s SATA snafu. I wasn’t suggesting the mechanism of failure was alike but rather that the problem and this one, if true, would be of similar magnitude shortly after release. Finally, some have stated that NVIDIA, Microsoft, and vendors all test rigorously. Yes, that should happen, but let’s look at EVGA’s announced recall of some of their GTX 670 cards due to failures. These cards were tested yet the screening failed to stop the cards from being released. We don’t have any specific details beyond “possible recall” so anything else is just speculation. For some more reading about some related occurances read The Inquirer’s report of EVGA’s GTX 670 Superclocked recall and SemiAccurate’s account of NVIDIA’s Kepler supply issues. According to SemiAccurate, supply issues may be caused by poorly designed lithography and mask problems. Perhaps that’s what’s causing defective chips?

I just picked up a 680 SC Signature. I was getting ready to list my Superclocked 570 on eBay and then saw this. I guess I'll keep the Fermi as backup in case this actually happens.

I really don't want to let go of this card. I love it frown.gif

this would make a lot of sense tho...

they took their original midrange chips (gk104) and beefed it up so it would actually seem like a gtx 680.. that would explain the lack of voltage control, they don't want us bumping it up anymore because it's already getting pushed!!!!

may be the last card i buy from them for awhile, sick of these shortcuts to profits...........
