[Wired] How Apple and Microsoft Armed 4,000 Patent Warheads

When Veschi signed on in 2008, Nortel hadn’t done much work to license its intellectual property. It was run by friendly Canadians who didn’t want to antagonize partners and customers by suing them. But the company had been remarkably adept at filing patents. “We had huge patent ceremonies in the CTO group that we made a big production of every year,” says Gillian McColgan, a former Nortel technical manager who is now chief technology officer with Rockstar.

This is why US patent law is broken....

Patent laws, much like corporate political donations, won't get fixed until corporate personhood is stripped and that won't happen until a movement like OWS actually becomes mainstream

The sad truth is the vast majority of people on earth are relatively stupid, easily distracted, easily manipulated and prone to group think.

There's a special Hell for those guys. They'll be forced to watch "an inconenient truth" over and over and over while licking Steve Jobs' toes clean.

Please don't correlate OWS with the fight against this type of patent abuse. OWS will become mainstream when they take a bath, get a job, and contribute something... anything to society.

As far as the patent portfolio that got auctioned off: The government should have subjected Rockstar to the same abuse clause that the consortium members. Apple, MS, and others were told they must license them for reasonable costs "whatever that is". Why on earth Rockstar is exempt from that clause is beyond me. MS and Apple are just using them as a proxy to attack everyone else. HUGE loophole.

The point is that corporate america outright owns politics. You can't ever expect changes to be made because the politicians that would be responsible for said changes are already being bought off. You won't ever make those meaningful changes until super pacs are removed and you won't do that until you remove coroprate personhood. That wont happen until the public outrage is from the majority.

Sadly, your straw man of OWS is precisely what I was talking about when I said that people are easily distracted and manipulated

Closing loopholes is hard.... especially when you have multi-billion dollar companies will armies of multi-million legal teams vs the government. The companies can basically outspend the government to find loopholes.

I like things to be patented, abolishing patents means less motivation to create or innovate

Scientists also want money like us!
