Broken CPU?

Thread Starter
im having some problems with my pentium D 805. its been running happily and very stabiliy for months now @ 4ghz, but i come home from uni today and my PC has forzen, when i came to restart i noticed the bios had been reset, i booted normaly with no overclock (first time since ive had it bpretty much) and it failed to boot, i now have to set my vcore to around 1.55 to get it to boot into windows on default, thats an fsb of 133x20 running at 2.6. pretty terrible!

does anyonw know what this is a sign of, it wouldnt be the end of the world if i have buggered it, its not an expensive CPU, but i dont want to go and do anything rush until i know for sure what the problem is.

also i had the vcore set to around 1.55 when it was overclocked to 4ghz, so the voltage is the same but my temp has gone up?? by around ten degrees, ive checked and double checked my cooling and its not the problem. please help anyone

Might possibly be a bad mobo. Try that CPU in a different mobo. Overclock it a bit, see if the settings change.

Can you overclock your cpu at all without bios resetting? Maybe your mobo battery is going dead.

Check with occt do a 30minute test to see if it is stable at all.

nah it wont let me overclock at all because my vcore cant go as high as it would need to currently. and if i set my bios to auto the voltage goes from what it used to be 1.3, to 1.55 for some reason, checking the cpu on another mobo now.... fingers crossed.

it seemed ok in my mates mobo although it deep seem to want more volts then usual.

managed to get it back up to 4ghz, needs alot more vcore then before which is annoying. lukerly the temp is still low enough at 37 degrees. i think it should be ok for a while, fingers crossed. i wont be leaving it going for a while though, wanna make sure that dosent happen again.

ty for the advice

You got it back to 4ghz on ur mobo?

If it needed more volts on your buds computer it could be because each mobo will vary in volts and some readings will be wrong etc.

i mean on my pc, before i only needed 1.54 volts to get to 4ghz on my mobo, its bak on my mobo running at 4ghz @ 1.63volts atm. i am slightly confused, ive heard of other ppl going through te same thing with another pentium, they kept having to raise the volts, then had to lower the overclock, and eventualy it wouldnt run at all! hopefully that wont happen until i can afford an upgrade/at all.

have you tried to do an overnight cmos reset?

leave the battery at the mobo overnight to see if it clears itself up.

Well those symptoms seem to me like the ones similar to a dying CPU. I guess if you have had that cpu for a while overclocked like that, it could shorten it's lifespan. Thats a risk you take when overclocking
