Why get a tiny 120mhz monitor when you could have a big 50" plasma? Isnt 60hz perfectly smooth? It is for me........screen tearing is fixed by vsync.

Just out of curiosity, on a 100~120hz monitor at 1080, what will completely max bf3 and have 60+ fps on average.

I dont think 690 is an overkill if you are playing the latest games and want to achieve 120hz.

However if you are a gamer playing in 2D only and not in 3Dvision.

Also if your monitor is 60hz limited.

Than YES 690 is an overkill.

I just purchased a gigabyte 670 OC and will be adding a second one for 120hz gaming and 3Dvision. Other than that 670 OC would have been fine.

My 590 was giving me 70-80 or even 100 fps on my 120hz monitor on ULTRA. Everything maxed including AA on 1080p.

a 580 can also achieve around 60 frps ULTRA as well.

680 and 670 OC will probably do the job too but dont expect 120hz constant gaming unless you go SLI or use 690.

I hate gaming on Plasma or Led TVs as I dont feel comfortable. I need to sit on a chair and put my keyboard and mouse on my desk and be very close to the action. I prefer gaming monitors to be much more smooth than any Led or LCD TV. Plasmas are an exception because their response times are miuch better than LED or LCD.

Also 120 hz gaming is extremely smooth for people like me who are sensitive. I cant go back to 60hz gaming after playing in 120 hz for many months.

Also for me it is easier to focus with a gaming monitor than a huge screen TV.

Who wouldn't want to play Crysis or Metro at max settings with minimum frame rates in the lower 50's? Yes for most games you'll be getting 1000 fps but for the graphically beautiful games like Metro, all the Crysis games, Batman with DX11, BF3 and even Skyrim, it would be great to play these at full settings and get frame rates that high. And to do that, you'll need some serious muscle. Now a GTX690 might be a little much as I doubt you could tell the difference between a GTX680 and GTX690 on a single 60 Hz 1920x1080 monitor.

It's not true, it'll gain you loads of performance. A single GTX 680 will not run everything maxed out at 1080p. Nor can a GTX 690, but it can gain you up to about 20 FPS in come cases. If you want your games to run the way they were designed to look, at optimal 60+ FPS, you're going to need every drop of power you can afford to get your hands on. I'm so bored of seeing people screaming this overkill thing. Unless you're the type of person who accepts 25FPS as playable.
TL;DR: A GTX 690 is not overkill. Quad SLI with 64 GB of RAM to run Minecraft at 640 x 480 is overkill.
you are contradicting yourself. doh.gif

Ahh yea fair point - it is kind hard sometimes using a big screen but I just love the fact my rig is integrated into my whole setup, good for movies etc........just everything really. Plus driving games are EPIC on a big screen smile.gif

It is important to note that a 120hz hdtv does not equal a 120hz computer monitor. You can go buy a 600hz plasma tv and think you have the highest refresh rate on the planet and then realize once you get it unboxed and plugged in, you still have to use vsync because it tears like hell. They dont render the same, so dont buy a video card that can pump a consistant 120fps and have to vsync down to 60hz. There arent many hdtvs that have dvi-d inputs anyways, if any at all, so youll be stuck with using an hdmi or regular dvi, which can only push a 60hz refresh anyways. Get a good 680, and invest the rest onto a real nice monitor, or go with the 690, and get a 120hz computer monitor.
