Best AMD FX Cpu for gaming between $130-160

Thread Starter
Im looking for a Best FX series CPU for my gaming build between $130-$160. I intended to use the fx-4170 on my build but was urged against it to go for the fx 6100, then soon enough the fx 8120? So whats truly the best cpu for the money? Whats the true difference besides # of cores and Ghz. or is there a better AMD gaming cpu for the price not in the fx series?

Heres my build so far

Newegg has the FX-8120 on sale right now for $160 shipped. Aside from that, the Phenom II X4 960T is really hard to beat at $130.

You keep mentioning "gaming". Unless the games you're running are highly multithreaded, you're better off going for a Thuban or Zosma (hex or quad-core Phenom II, respectively) than you are with a FX. FX pulls ahead in 7zip, video editing, and similar applications, but its IPC is generally lower than Phenom II's, and because the vast majority of games are only single or dual-threaded, they can't derive much benefit from FX's arch.

One could always make the "do a crazy overclock to the FX" argument, but I wouldn't be too keen on doing that with that Rosewill PSU you have. If you want to wait until the fall, you could potentially put together a second-gen FX rig; it will likely be significantly better than the current gen.

So:
1090T
960T (quad; may possibly unlock to a hex. Probably best option if you don't plan on doing vid encoding)

Many people buy them and seem to having their own experience with performance. 8120 works great for me personally while gaming, folding, etc(and I just like saying 8 cores out loud). I also owned both Thubans (normal 6 core and 960T), great processors indeed. If you want an FX processor, buy one.

960T or FX 4170. Not saying that my 8120 sucks at gaming, but you won't need an "8-core" for gaming only.

Says the OCN member with a kick@$$ "8-core" cooking at 5GHz. Tell me it doesn't feel good to say, "My 8 core runs @ 5GHz." I'm waiting............

hows the 960T? seems like a low clock speed . I have a Athlon 620 and after hearing about the FX line being not so good do you think the 960T will be a big upgrade or should I stick with the 620?

It would be a nice upgrade if you have a board that will OC well and/or possibly unlock it. 960T are Black Edition and cut down 6 core units. Lots of people here have gotten lucky and were able to unlock the 5th and 6th core. Potentially making it a 6 core BE.
