AMD Phenom II X2 Black Edition CPUs

Hi there,
I have recently taken interest to AMD's Unlocked multiplier BE processors for laptops. The ones I am interested in are the X620 and X640. There is very little information about these cpu's on the web apart from Notebookcheck's info on it. Has anyone in the world actually got one of these BE CPUs working? I would love to replace my N620 with one even though the TDP is 10W higher than mine. I have also looked on ebay to find these processors but has anyone actually fitted it into a laptop and got it working? There are no videos on the CPUs at all which makes me think that no one actually has one. No laptops use this CPU and I do wonder why. It looks like a great replacement for my N620. Anyone heard of these CPU's in use?

The reason is because they're extremely poor performers by comparison, when it comes to performance per watt. My old i5-460M was a hyperthreaded dual core CPU with a TDP of 35w based on the Westmere architecture. It would clock up to 2.8GHz under load for both cores and matched most older desktop Core 2 Quads.

In all honesty, there's no reason to go for an AMD chip right now if gaming is in mind. Upgrading your chip from the N620 to the X620 and overclocking the latter will bring no gains to your current laptop. Why? Because your laptop is severely GPU bottlenecked. The Phenom II mobile lines are nothing more than converted Athlon II desktop CPUs. Seriously. They aren't worth it. If the Phenom II CPUs were actually made from the same Phenom II desktop CPU designs, they'd have done much better, but really... they came waaay too late in the end.

I'd steer clear of it since it'll be more of a waste of money and you'll merely *think* you're getting higher FPS whereas you'll gain nothing. Trust me. Not worth it at all.

i7-2920XM is also rare, but in a good way - you can overclock it to like 4.5ghz, basically you get overclocked i7-2600k performance in a laptop.

But yes, there are some engineering samples on ebay. Probably fake or stolen, because I really doubt they ever shipped them. Better odds with an unlocked Phenom II X4 X920. $55 is much more reasonable that $200 for the X620. Not sure if ebay links are allowed, pretty sure you'll find it by searching "Phenom X920" .

At the same clock, yes. It has a 45W TDP, but most dual-cores have a 35W TDP. If you undervolt it, you'll be able to keep the thermals in check. All I'm saying, that's the only viable upgrade; or a lower-clocked quad if you just want better multi-threaded than you have now. Triple core at ~2.1ghz is a sidegrade/downgrade; 3ghz dual-core isn't worth the effort.
