Asus Z77 Maximus V Formula/Extreme - Page 2

At $499 for the 3930K at Microcenter (with the Intel OC Protection Plan included), it seems like a great deal: 50% more cores for for less than 50% more money. Then add in the extra 24 PCIE3.0-Capable lanes and it seems to be the platform with higher degree of longevity. The MVF is the only board that may change my mind, or if Intel release a new "updated" IVB without the TIM issues...
Frustrating, isn't it?

Agreed

What's even more frustrating is having EVERY SINGLE PART for your next build except the motherboard you're waiting to be released!!

I'm in the same "boat" as you. Caveat to that being: I'm deployed on a MEU, so I won't be home before launch day and I don't have to see the pile of NewEgg/Amazon boxes building up in the office back home... Brand new i5-3570k, GTX-680 SC+, loads of Corsair parts, but not a MoBo in sight... I love the designs and features of the Asus boards, and I miss my R3BE (sold the old rig a few weeks into the deployment), but I don't want to "settle" for the Gene if I get home before the Formula (or an Extreme, if there will be one) is released.

Anyone getting the formula and NOT planning on watercooling? I decided to keep my M5G and skip the Fromula, because of my new build plans, but I want the waterblock from the formula. If someone would be willing to trade my stock sexy M5G air northbridge heatsink for the M5F waterblock, I have cash.

worth a shot though biggrin.gif. I'm sure SOMEBODY is going to get this mobo and not use watercooling... I'd pay $50+ my MVG heatsink for one, and pay shipping on my end.

Asus' Maximus V Formula to be available in two SKUs

So far Asus has been very secretive about one feature of its upcoming Maximums V Formula R.O.G. motherboard and even covered up part of the motherboard when showing off the board at various events. So far Asus has been very secretive about one feature of its upcoming Maximums V Formula R.O.G. motherboard and even covered up part of the motherboard when showing off the board at various events. VR-Zone can now exclusively reveal what the hidden feature is and we've also found out that Asus will be offering two slightly different SKUs of the motherboard in question.

Beyond what we reported back in March, not that much appear to have change with the board itself, but it looks like Asus will be bundling a dual band mini PCI Express 802.1a/b/g/n Wi-Fi/Bluetooth 4.0 card with the board, something that wasn't clear at the press event.

Asus' Maximus V Formula to be available in two SKUs

Sadly this is the best picture we've managed to dig up of the two SKUs

The big secret that Asus was hiding on the boards with a small cardboard cover with an R.O.G. logo on it is a headphone amplifier. Sadly we don't have a picture of it, but it's using a Texas Instruments 6120A2 amplifier, an amplifier Asus has used in some of its higher-end sound cards like the Xonar Essence STX. We're still not sure about the audio codec for this motherboard, so we'll have to wait and see, as Asus is simply using its SupremeFX IV branding which doesn't really give away a lot of details, as the company has used various audio controllers with the SupremeFX branding.

Asus' Maximus V Formula to be available in two SKUs

As we mentioned, Asus will be offering two SKUs of the Maximus V Formula, one with and one without the ThunderFX USB sound card and amplifier. We're still not sure we get the point of the ThunderFX as a motherboard bundle, as this C-Media 6631 powered USB sound card appears to have been designed more for console use as a headset amplifier and noise cancelling solution. We'd rather have had the noise cancelling built into the motherboard audio in this case via some external microphone array, but then again, a pair of noise cancelling headphones ought to do the job just as well.

Asus should be unveiling the Maximus V Formula at Computex next week, alongside a range of other new R.O.G. products at a special press event. We would expect the Maximus V Formula to be yet another expensive model from Asus, but it should be less than the P8Z77-V Premium at least.
