Recreating Windows 8 with old start button.

Thread Starter
I'm a budding programmer with a decent amount of knowledge, and I continue to learn as I go. I work with mainly Objective-C as I hope to create apps for various apple devices, and then branch into lua to jump in the android market.

I've got the Windows 8 Beta on a laptop, and I like the seemingly apparent increase in speed. I do not, however, like the Metro UI.

They've gotten rid of the Registry fix to get the old menu back, and Start8 from Stardock is not what I want, and ViStart apparently has some issues in itself.

What all will I need to accomplish making an addon that resembles the Windows 7 style Start Menu, that is easy to use, and doesn't inadvertently become a security risk.

No. The option to permanently change it back in the Registry was removed by MS, on grounds that it might cause system instability... IMO they just want to force the Metro UI down the throats of those of us who hate change!

Good luck with this one, I am most likely my self skipping Windows 8 cause of that ugly and retarted "metro" UI.

Is it actually that bad? I've never used it myself. Best thing about windows 7 imo is how you can push the start button and then type a program name in there and then. Is there something like that on windows 8?

Somewhat, just imagine it taking up your whole screen.

The only thing that would save me from having to do this, is if they Registry entry to enable and disable the Metro UI finds it's way back into the final product. Some MS folks over on the MS forums have said that using this "hack" as they love to call it, might cause instability and security risks...

Start8 from Stardock just takes that style of "start screen" and attempts to condense it withing a start menu. There's nothing else involved, it's so basic and the interface leaves much to be desired.

ViStart looks much better, but it suffers from other flaws from what I've read.

I love my Macbook, and OSX, but I love Windows too. I'm not one of those people who make an ultimatum that it's one or the other. I like both for their strengths at their intended purpose. The appealing thing about Windows 8, is that it can run on just about anything! I got it to run on an old P4.
