the 6870 seems to be about 10% better than the 460 from the charts/reviews/benchmarks I looked at. Here's a chart for you http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2011-gaming-graphics-charts/Gamer-Index,2673.html
What's your budget and what games/programs you plan on running?

According to the above link
So for the GTX460 1GB @ Core Clock 850Mhz, Shader Clock 1700Mhz, Memory Clock at 1000Mhz, its clear that it easily beats the HD6870 1GB @ 900Mhz Core Clock, Memory Clock 1050.
So the above screen shots would insinuate that the GTX460 1GB @ Core Clock 900, Shader Clock 1800, Memory Clock 1050Mhz. Beats the **** out of the HD6870 1GB @ Core Clock 900, Memory Clock 1050
So a friend of mine wants to buy one of the above cards and it seems that i should recommend the GTX460 1GB on the above screen shot, coz the GTX460 above goes for $120 and the HD6870 above goes for $170. He has a budget of $150 but he said he could stretch it to $170 at max. so i think i better tel him not to stretch the budget he should just take the GTX460
What do you all recommend, considering the two cards above?

as you can see, 6870 smokes the 460 1GB. but is on par with the 560

sorry but can you re-write this, i cannot understand what you are saying.
Edit: So your saying he cannot get the 6870 because its 170 right? if i were him, i'd get the 6870 because its 1 generation ahead of the 460 and only for 20 more $

He Just wants a GPU, i told him to go with the HD6870 at first is when he said he could try get more money, but after looking at http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/evga-geforce-gtx-460-ftw-01g-p3-1378-tr-overclocked,2795.html

i highly doubt if the extra cash is necessary considering he will not over clock the GPU or anything in his machine,

But you have to remember, the Amd Drivers are still bad atm, Not only that, the 460 has a higher transistor count, and Ill assume that it has more instructions as well to optimize gaming, Although, the 6800 has more shaders, and is newer.
Maybe when Amd settles their driver problems the 6800 will excel.
