Hi people smile.gif

A friend just asked me if i would help him choose a new laptop, and of course i would. Turns out that I doesn't really know anything about those laptop GPU chips/card and i find it hard to compare the graphics cards. If anyone would take a look at em' and tell me what they think it would me great

the two laptops are as following:

Acer Aspire 5755G i5

2,5 GHz Intel Core i5-2450M
6 GB DDR3 RAM
750 GB HDD
15,6" Screen @ 1366 x 768 pixel
nVidia GeForce GT 630M

or!

ASUS K53SK-SX038V

2,2 GHz Intel Core i7-2670QM
8 GB DDR3 RAM (2x 4 GB)
500 GB HDD
15,6" @ 1366 x 768 pixel
AMD Radeon HD 7610

It seems that the asus laptop has better specs that the Acer, except for the HDD and the GPU!
He will be using it for schoolwork and some gaming (lol, world of warcraft and skyrim)

Please help me, help a friend biggrin.gif

Budget? I vote neither. 630M is decent for gaming, but nothing special. Acer Aspire laptops are pretty much junk; not worth spending over $500 for. Or if you could give us a site it has to be from, etc.

The short list of "good" GPUs in the <$900 laptop range are:

Nvidia: 660M > 650M = 560M >> 555M ~= 640M > 630M = 540M

AMD: 7800M line (not yet released) > 7700M line (yet to release) >> 7690M slightly > 6770M ~= 7670M > 6650M > 6630M

Double > signs indicates 30%+ difference. That should get you started. If you want to do your own research, go here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html

My girlfriend has the previous gen aspire, and I gotta say it's pretty good. It's not without it's problems but build quality is good and it's a pretty solid performer in terms of games. You should be able to handle modest settings on Skyrim and WoW pretty easily, but you're not gonna get serious gaming potential out of them obviously.

The extra 2GB RAM on the Asus probably will go to waste for your friend, 6GB should be more than enough (the bottleneck for games will almost certainly be the GPU, for both laptops) while the extra CPU power in the Asus will probably make things more noticeably fast in every day use. The GPU on the Acer however will make for a better gaming experience (and probably a tad more futureproof) but not by extreme amounts...

At the end of the day though, I think laptops are about more than just raw power most of the time - the feel, form factor and connectivity is always an issue. For example, I hate having a CD drive as I just feel it's a waste of time, but others can't live without. What about built in speakers? Are they good enough or will your friend constantly have to plug in to externals? These are the things that make or break for me, but hey, I also have a desktop so it's a bit different.

Keep us updated, I'm keen to know which one you choose.

If he's gaming.. build him a desktop.

Gaming laptops you shouldn't spend less than 1k on to do it right.
