Ubuntu 12.04... Struggling to find applications, remove, etc.

Really in need of some help here.. Not finding any good documentation on 12.04 as of yet... and struggling my way through things. I'm trying to get some quality temperature monitoring software installed here.. I've tried lm-sensors, i've tried xfce-sensors (though I'm not running a XFCE environment I don't' think, and that's why I can't right click any "panels" and add the temp sensors to it). Now that I have stuff, I can't find any sort of intuitive way to remove it either. I look through the history in the Software Center and sometimes it shows it, sometimes it doesn't. I search through Synaptic and sometimes I find it, sometimes I don't.

All very confusing to me, haha.

So essentially I'm looking to do this:

1. Get some quality temperature monitoring software, as well as something that can read my system specs. I'm thinking similar to a realtemp and a CPU-Z, for example. Doesn't have to be identical or anything like that. I just need some information on the system while it's up in Linux. I don't feel safe with big overclocks and no way to see PC health.

2. I need help getting Folding@home set up... i7-3770k, HT on, clocked at 4.7GHz and a 7970 overclocked to 1300/1700... should be able to fold rather well on this beast and help out team OCN... however, I have no idea hwo to get it working properly. I followed someone's guide, and needless to say, it doesn't load the CPU when I run it... so not sure what I did wrong.

I'm about to reformat and start over again with this Ubuntu, and fresh install it. I've got so much random crap because I've been trying to get things working, and trying to find programs I like, that it feels rather cluttered now. Unless, like I said earlier, there's an easier way to clean up applications that I'm just not seeing. Hopefully something similar to an add/remove programs from windows. That seems to be one thing that Windows absolutely nailed... Add/Remove programs. LOL

Thanks in advance *nix users, appreciate the help! smile.gif

Update... I seem to be folding as it stands right now. This i7-3770k is getting around 35k PPD on an 8013 unit I guess? I didn't set up any flags or anything, as I don't know how to do that stuff. I just know that XFCE Sensors Viewer is not showing a single temperature above 76C, so I'm happy with that. That will totally work while I'm tinkering on the internet.

Any insight as to how I can locate and clean up programs more efficiently? I tried uninstalling some that I put in using the Package manager, and on reboot there was an error with my Software Center... had to sudo apt-get install -f in the terminal to fix it... all good now though.

EDIT: Anyone know how to get my 7970 folding? i tried doing it through FAHControl... but it said no work available for GPUs or something? I configured the SMP to 7 cores, leaving the 8th for handling the GPU... but no dice.

to remove just open termanial, and tpye this : sudo apt-get remove (name pf program) other wise use synaptic. if you just want to clean up your menu a little and dont want to fully uninstall anything, try alacarte. its on the software center. or you could just type sudo apt-get install alacarte

now for folding: dont expect much from the 7970. folding is made for nividia cards, and dosnt do well on amds. also dont leave one core free, folding sets itself to use only what you dont, your leftover cpu cycles. when you need your cpu, its there. when you dont, folding gets it. your gpu will take what it needs.

Yea, the issue I'm having is dependencies on other packages I guess? So for example you install Chromium and it doesn't just install Chromium, it installs like 2-3 things to support it... so it's obviously going to leave straggling crap behind isn't it?

no, those are packages it needs. most dont show up in the menu. and the few that do you can remove (from the menu, not uninstall) using alacarte

but really very, very few of these dependencies ever show there face. just install and enjoy. they arnt crap, they are necessary for the package you want to work. i just consider them part of the program
