Interesting read. Airlines will be obsolete if this happens.

Spare oxygen tanks /w masks would be a good safety feature, but that requires passengers to be conscious in the event of an emergency. It also assumes that another tube won't ram you in the back side.

If the vacuum is good enough to allow for 4,000 mph speeds, an oxygen mask won't really help. The partial pressure (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partial_pressure) of 100% oxygen at such air pressures would still be too low.

Below 0.16 bar, you will asphyxiate even in a pure oxygen environment.

It might not be as bad as you think - short of the tube shearing the capsule will never hit normal pressure at full speed. There will be an area of mounting pressure first, which will help with deceleration.
A light conical nose cone would possibly be sufficient; even at 4,000mph a weak atmosphere is not all that much of a barrier. Just for comparison the shuttle starts to enter atmosphere at ~18,000 mph. These capsules would slow down very quickly, therefore the heating would be very much a transient problem (no need for heat shielding).

I don't think there is any possible design that would allow these containers to survive extremely rapid recompression of the tube (such as what would happen if the tube were completely severed a short distance ahead of a transport) and still be light enough to be economical. The shuttle isn't really a good example for this as atmospheric pressure increases quite slowly, and the shuttle is a spacecraft designed to withstand these stresses. It also takes the shuttle nearly 15-20 minutes to slow down to landing speed, and during 12 of those the shuttle is hot enough for ionized gasses to interfere with communications. If they just dove it straight into the atmosphere at a 90 degree angle, it would break apart, even if it didn't melt.

That, coupled with electro mechanical and / or mechanical breaks, would bring the cabin to a stop very quickly and minimise the risk of asphyxiation in the case of a cabin wall breaching.
Edit: Grammar

I completely agree with this.

Did you even look at the original article?

One person per capsule would obviously be completely uneconomical.

First point is not true and the second is blatantly false.

As at least a few people have pointed out, there are already transportation systems in common use (airliners and bullettrains) where a collision or crash at full speed is almost 100% certain to result in the deaths of everyone on-board.

wow 4 thousand miles an hour??

are they seriously thinking of transporting people liek this?!

i mean sure atmospheric re=-enty and even the speed it takes to get out of Earth is much higher, but i dunno..

These people are trained to be against this level of G's on a dialy basis - Just imagine 90% of the passanger barfing after 2 Minutes of travel .... Followed by god only knows what

what about Plate tectonics - would these Tube systems be needing constant mainetenance if going over seas to other continents?

How WOULD we connect continents with this in the first place, under water? thats sound extremely dangerous to me.

Above water? how would you suspend it int he air?? shipper will need to drastically change Boat routes to not colide with a tube, but what if during rough seas? too many variables here.

And then, how can you protect and enforce the safty of those on board? How do I know that soemwhere along the line, some terrorist hasnt tampered with the tube somewhere, leading to the passangers extremely quick amazing death's.

Overall... I think this could be a great idea for Cardo Lines, shipping etc. but People Transport? Not so sure I can believe this is a good idea.

This is just as crazy as the space elevator lol awesome to have - but goo dluck seeing one before you die

Article states that the maximum acceleration experienced by passengers would be 1G, which is enough to accelerate from 0-4,000mph in about three minutes.

ah, unable to read the article - but as long as they not accelerating hard then I guess this could work.

I just dont think they can do this for intercontinental travel.

I wonder though, if the technology could be adapted to allow a capsule to leave earth Atmosphere hmmm

These people are trained to be against this level of G's on a dialy basis - Just imagine 90% of the passanger barfing after 2 Minutes of travel .... Followed by god only knows what

Someone (I think it was lordikon) worked out that the amount of g-force won't be that much to get up to 4000mph in a respectable time. 0-60mph in 6 seconds is about the same as a regular affordable sports car (Mazda MX-5, Golf GTI, etc.) would mean 10mph every 1 second assuming the acceleration is going to stay exactly the same all the way to 4000 MPH it should take 400 seconds or around 6 minutes 40 seconds. I would say that the acceleration shouldn't be too much of a problem. The only problems I can see with actually building one of these is a way to keep the tube a vacuum while the capsule is going along and stopping idiots from damaging the tube. Other than that building this would be rather simple.

yah thatws what i was just thinking about - with the physics out of the way, its the basics that need to be figured out - Security..Construction..Location/Destination.

theres just no realistic way to make this for intercontinental travel

I'm sure people said that about airplanes too. tongue.gif

Look, this cramped thinking "we can't afford it! we can't afford it!" is a complete lie.

How fast can governments always find money to fight a war?

*snap*

That fast!

If the priority of these things was as high as a war, people would *snap* find the money to get 'er DONE.

So let's think "practical high speed travel with bullet capsules" and "practical maglev on a wide scale" please! biggrin.gif
