[VideoCardz] GK110 Performance Prediction - Page 15

What's the point of predicting something if it's based on nothing but assumptions and rumors...
Nothing to see here.

I think im about to pick up a 2nd monitor.... with the 670 and 680 out + the new GK110 chip information slowy getting out, I can see some reason to update my visual experience before I update my graphics card (Current 580).

Even for predictions, these are pretty lame.
Edit: Someone should change title to "performance prediction" because, this, is not a ''preview.''

Who's to say GK110 won't be compute hamstrung on the GeForce line. I hope it won't, I know some people want "hybrid" graphics/compute cards and I wish them happiness. The Tesla K10 is a GTX690, not so powerful at DP Flops but decent at SP.

An article was on the news section front page about a month ago: TSMC has given NVidia priority on 28nm yields to keep them from going to Samsung's fabs. By the time it trickles down to retail, we could see improved availability on GTX680/GTX690 sometime this summer and GK110 meeting it's target Q4 launch for Tesla (GeForce if NVidia graces us with such a card).

As for the need to have all that power and more (SLI setups), Callsign Vega is OCN's resident "extreme" guy ... Here's his previous setup: http://www.overclock.net/t/1220962/vegas-heavyweight-display-and-computer-edition-2012. And benches:http://www.overclock.net/t/1220962/vegas-heavyweight-display-and-computer-edition-2012/370#post_16915399. There is a need for all that power: extreme multi display not only needs, but requires it for maxed out gaming.

So with all that GPU power we need to invent something to weaponize our 3DMark11 scores, so we can protect the world from aliens and ice road truckers etc.

If GK110 were compute hamstrung on the Geforce line, it'd be the same story in Quadro. They come from the same wafers -- firmware/drivers and some on-card things change, but they are essentially the same. GK110 will need to be held back in the same ways Tahiti is held back. People don't realize that AMD's mid range - high end lineup are made for compute, and gaming. This is one major reason GK104 seems to be better than Tahiti.
GK110 needs to be, ground-up, a Tahiti killer. With GCN, AMD is taking CUDA head on, and it's been trailblazing in compute performance since Tahiti's release with no competition. GK110 needs to be better than Tahiti and Tenerife. Tenerife is supposed to come in sporting a 20% increase in compute performance over Tahiti, with less power consumption and better thermals. For nV to beat out Tahiti, Tenerife, GK104 and to make itself a cost effective option while doing so, seems unlikely.
I expect a good compute card to come out of GK110, but it'll be hard pressed to be a relevant gaming GPU.

I think this prediction is overly optimistic, but it really will depend on the clocks that can be achieved.

GK110 seems to have 150% more ROPs, and memory bandwidth and these are generally more of a limiting factor the limiting factor than shader power, at least looking at GK104 with current games. So, I don't think making the card even more lopsided toward shader performance is going to be especially helpful, for most games. The GTX 680 seemed pretty memory bandwidth limited in some scenarios, and GK110 isn't changing that balance for the better.

It's easy to cripple FP64 performance. The Tesla M2090 uses the same dies as the GTX580 but has four times the FP64 performance. Softmods aren't possible anymore either, they extra FP64 functionality is disabled in hardware, probably on the die itself, just like laser cutting cache or cores.

The earliest specs I've seen of GK110 indicated a 512 bit memory bus, allowing over 320GBs of VRAM bandwidth. I'm uncertain about some revision that kicked back the bus size to 384 bit. Suffice to say, This souldn't be a VRAM starved GPU and hopefully the Tesla improvement in queue management should also improve how well fed the card will be. I'm unsure if it will be possible to take advantage of the new technology capable of spawning new tasks internally without sending reports to the CPU, if so that should immensely free up bandwidth and task latency (if such a thing exist I might've misnamed it), I never coded on GPUs so I don't know in full detail the CPU/GPU relation in a video game.

On a different GK110 subject, with the advent of virtualized GPU and the proclaimed future of video games streaming, would you guys believe it would be feasible to own a game server at home that would hold all the horse power in a closet / storage location and stream to small clients in a LAN setting for multiplayers and run the game foe every player.

That's insane!I'm thinking of it now. A single gk110 could be equal to two 680s or a single 690. So a single "790" could be equal to FOUR 680s and two "790s" equal to EIGHT 680s. Obviously you have the scaling issue but it is fun to think about! drool.gif
