Help me Pick a new Work Laptop Hard Drive!

Thread Starter
Told my boss I needed a new hard drive for my laptop, she asked a price, I said $100, she said go for it....so now I just need to pick it.

I have a Dell D630, it came with the standard 5400rpm 80gb junker, so ANYTHING will be a speed up. I'm debating between the 500gb momentus XT, or a 120GB SSD.

Opinions?

I would always go for the SSD, first reason being its a work laptop and how many files do you actually need on there and is most of the important files you access saved on a server. Second the laptops performance will be significantly better, the battery would last longer and your whole operating system would be faster.

I use an SSD in my Latitude. Best upgrade, ever.

Do you really need 500gb or will 128gb do cause if the 128gb will hold everything I would go for the SSD if its running windows 7, if not you just wont have trim support. Which if i remember correctly wont really be that big of a deal if its a current generation SSD.

But if the 500gb momentus XT is a single platter drive and since it is also running at 7200 rpm you will see a boost in loading times easily with either. What matters is if your work laptop supports AHCI and has at least Sata 2.0 if not then the SSD would not perform at its best.....prob the same for the XT since its a hybrid.

if you need more room, a happy medium to a SSD is a Momentus XT it is a platter drive with a few Gigs Solid State for caching.

My XPS 15z came with the Momentus hybrid SSD (the 256 GB SSD option was too pricey). I have to say that I'm surprised how well it performs. It boots extremely fast like you would expect from a standard SSD. Benchmark wise it falls between conventional hard drives and SSD's, so it actually does perform reasonably well. As suggested, I'd decide based on how much storage you need.

Upgraded my laptop with a hybrid drive and I immediately saw the difference in boot times, and battery life wink.gif

Hybrid drive would be the way to go if you need the extra space, otherwise go for a power efficient ssd.

i always put SSDs in work laptops just because if it gets dropped the chances of the data being damaged on the SSD are much lower. i can go buy a new laptop today, i cant redo all that data without going into my office and doing a huge data restore and thats assuming i have had time to backup that new file or whatever
