I need help please. Never used AMD but willing to consider it for future build.

Thread Starter
I have researched extensively.
My current build is a Dell Studio 540.
Dell proprietary PC mini case with proprietary Mobo and Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83 Mghz. 6 GB DDR2 6400 Ram Dual Channel, nVidia GTS240 1GB video card and Realtek audio card.. Hauppage HDTV 950 TV tuner for one channel only. PC Running on Win 7 Home 64-bit .

My next build will likely be put together by me or someone who knows about PC innards.

I am looking at the next generation Intel (post Ivy-Bridge) OR the equivalent AMD version. I have been reading good reviews about the good potential of the upcoming desktop AMD Trinity Virgo processor. I have one Intel SSD which I am planning to use as Cache to take advantage of the SRT Intel Terchnology to accelerate my other 6 mechanical HDDs. I have been asking if there is any AMD processor that offers similar benefits. No one seems to know of such a thing. Wonders if the new AMD Trinity Virgo will offer something similar?

Will not use AMD processor unless i get that feature of speeding up the mechanical drives to close to SSD speeds.

Note:
My computer needs are:
- Fast PC for general purposes. I HAVE ZERO INTEREST IN GAMING.
(So I have no need for discrete video cards).
Motherboard with native Sata3, USB 3.0, and external e-Sata port.. On-board video and audio capabilities.
- I need to be able to run two 27in. monitors
- To view and record TV on the PC via a dual or quad Tuner Card.
- Chat online
- email
- web surfing maintaining over 50 webpages opened simultaneously
- Skype and Yahoo Messenger
- Extensive Spreadsheets
- Internet Radio

So, if i were to build my PC right now BEFORE AMD Trinity Virgo my components would be

- Lian Li PC-9F Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Case 3X5.25 6X3.5INT 2XUSB3.0 (native) eSATA Audio No PS $103.00
((alternatively I would consider a special ediiton from Coolermaster -only available from their online store- : the HAF 912 Advance Black Steel W/Side Window Panel ATX (USB 3.0) Mid Tower Chassis $100.00))

- XFX 750W PRO750W Core Edition Single Rail ATX 12V 62A 24PIN ATX Power Supply 80PLUS Bronze PSU P1-750S-NLB9 $ $65.00
- ASUS Sabertooth Z77 ATX LGA1155 DDR3 SLI 3PCI-E16 4PCI-E1 SATA3 HDMI DisplayPort USB3.0 Motherboard Military grade $240.00
- G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL CL9-9-9-24 240PIN DIMM MemoryRipjaws 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600 $42.00
- Intel i7 3770k Ivy Bridge BX80637I73770K $330.00
Total:
$ 738.00
All these prices are in Canadian dollars they have been extensively researched and are best prices in the Canadian market. Having said this I consider that the US market prices would be very similar too.

Peripherals:
- 2 Dell 27IN. UltraSharp U2711M $650.00 each
- Hauppage HDTV 2250 Dual Tuner $115.00

I would love to hear knowledgeable opinions suggestions and ideas of any AMD enthusiasts.

Cut your budget in half and you will have a perfectly fine PC that will last you years.  Seriously, this is overspending.  General PC tasks are no more CPU intensive than they are GPU intensive.  Get an APU.... smaller case.... smaller PSU..... lower your power consumption.

agreed with XD

What are you planning on doing with it if no gaming and no video rendering / folding there isn't a need for a high end cpu will be a waste of monies.

XD.. what is an APU? Cut budget in half by doing what? Shall i just keep my own unit and spend 0 then?
The two 27 inch monitor i want them for my old eyes
I do want the fast Intel Smart Response Technology so i need a motherboard offering that.
Where do i save "half my money"?

Rght now i dont have the monitors or the MOBO to get that speed. MY processor is based on the 775 socket so i cannot re-use it in either 1155 socket or the newer ones either.
So which components would you use instead of my listed ones to achieve my goals and save the money you are talking about?

.
go with an intel i3-2100, and H61 socket 1155 motherboard, use your ssd drive dont bother with SRT drive caching unless its a 32GB,grab a 7200RPM 1TB HDD, use the onboard graphics of that i3-2100k cpu, 2x2GB DDR3 1333 RAM by corsair is pretty cheap and good, should be a good lil web surfer/tv watcher (hauppage) on the cheap.

eyefinity/surround isnt all that great with just 2 monitors.
If going eyefinity/surround/video editing i would possibly think about changing the setup a touch from my recommended.

Do I see a 750W PSU and NO GPU?! You could run 2 of the highest end GPU's with EASE with that kind of power supply. If you aren't even going to have a dedicated GPU get a high quality 350w or something..

As far as the rest of the components.. Like everyone else has been saying, you don't need the highest end stuff for basic tasks. An i3-2100 + H61 chipset motherboard + maybe a low end GPU will do you wonders. I would suggest a low end GPU rather than use on die graphics from an Intel chip because it will take quite a bit of strain off the CPU. I had a G530 and even watching movies/playing flash games would crank my CPU usage up a ton but with a dedicated card I saw a HUGE decrease in the average CPU usage.

Also, there is no "AMD equivalent" when it comes to high end CPU's. Intel's offerings are quite a bit ahead of the competition.

You asked what an APU was? APU = Accelerated Processing Unit. It is a CPU with an integrated GPU on the same die. The APU has the ability to perform some pretty decent gaming without the need for a dedicated GPU. This is where AMD is ahead of Intel, in the APU department.

As far as SSD caching goes, only Intel's boards offer that not AMD. The Intel chipsets that offer SSD caching are Z68, Z77, and X79. You must have a board with one of those chipsets to utilize that technology.

Thank you all for your comments and observations. The 750 Watt though larger than what I need now, assures me of some breathing space in case I want to add some discrete card/s down the road,, specially in the understanding that the real watt consumption will be as high as the components served require. So if i only need to draw 400 Watts from the available 750W that would be the consumption I would be paying to my Hydro company... and besides: paying $64 to buy the XFX 750W PRO750W Core Edition Single Rail is not "waste of money" cause it is an average price for any quality 500W PSU.

The one other minimum requirement is to accelerate my 6 mechanical drives to "SSD like" reading and writing speeds via a SSD drive acting as cache for the HDD's. For that feature offered by Intel Smart Response Technology I am willing to spend the extra discretionary money..
As well as gamers do invest big bucks in higher end GPUs like the nVidia's GeForce GTX 690 or the Radeon HD 7970 OC I am willing to pay the price for those components that will allow me to get the SRT results.

Hope I have now clarified my intentions and substantiated my decisions.

Thank you all.
