Such Draconian habits.
( Had to find a way to fit Draconian into this post )

I believe you'll find I was very positive and said I couldn't wait to see more DRM like this.

I thought hatred was the opposite of that?

Ah but you see, it was a disguised hate. He's excited to see it used more in new games! redface.gif

CoD:MW3 hit a billion dollars in sales it's first week, most from pre-orders.

I did the math on a launch thread. I was *O.O*

I personally cant wait to see all the other publishers justify always online connections by requiring assets to be streamed in order to play the game even in solo "sessions".
It will also be interesting to see how other games do the "skimp on story, but replays give you different areas and/or pickups that you can sell for money".
The Elder Scrolls would work well in this regard.
They can just cut out parts of the maps and randomly spawn them in as you run about, but only give you a certain amount of map areas per playthrough to keep it fresh for the next time. Or they could just trash map creation altogether and just use the aforementioned content streaming service to just randomly create map areas.
Then there's the gateway to gambling experience of playing on the off chance that you'll find something awesome that could maybe make you some money.
Or maybe we could have a Simcity game where Maxis basically just stream the gaming session to you on randomly generated maps and you can create resource stockpiles that you can sell on the internet for money. There will be no true single player experience and noone will be able to play offline, but the public have spoken!
It's an interesting model and I cant wait to see more of it in gaming in the future.
Also, Draconian.

The situation you describe really isn't that far fetched. It's the trend that the idustry is going in, and actiblizzard and D3 will show that it's possible to do and make even MORE money than before.

I do not think I'll be a gamer in my golden years, unfortunately. When D3's servers go down, there's going to be no amount of fiddling with old systems/OSs/Drivers to get an archaic game to work when I'm bored and in my 70s because it won't exist anymore. This is only the start, now that it's proven that a popular franchise can change the paradigm

That would be horrible in an elder scrolls game. I'm all for randomly generating maps in a game like Diablo, but I like my elder scrolls world to be consistent. A limited amount of areas per playthrough would crap all over the open world these games are known and loved for.

I highly highly doubt Diable 3 will come anywhere close to the 20 million + mark the last couple CoDs have hit. In fact CoD actually does have pretty long legs. The CoD games generally chart in the top 10/20 every month up until the release of the new ones. Like I said they are just in a completely different sales universe then everything else.

Even evergreen titles like Diablo or Mario games sell the majority of their copies in the first couple months. Diablo 3 I'd imagine does somewhere between 10-15 million lifetime. As an entire franchise 1 and 2 sold 18 million combined to give you some perspective.

Diablo III is only on PC, whereas CoD is on all available platforms.
