Help me build a new gaming rig! (~$2000) [Updated: Build Complete!]

Thread Starter
My current gaming PC recently died (due to a nearby lightning strike) so I need to plan out a new build.

Lightning Details: (Click to show)
I was busily playing Diablo III with my monk in nightmare difficulty when there was a lightning strike very close to my house. I heard a pop and my PC turned off and would not restart although my monitor was still on. There was also a funny smell coming from the tower.

A quick inspection with the cover off did not show any obvious damage but I’m not sure I would trust any of the components in there in the future. In other news my router isn’t working and I think my 40 inch Samsung LCD was damaged as well. I am definitely going to get rid of my cheap $20 power strips and get some better surge protection (and backup my hard drives more often).

I think everyone here would agree that I am in need of a new build although my Core2Duo setup ran like a champ for almost 4 years. I was already planning to build a new pc this year but Mother Nature has accelerated my schedule.

My PC use is ~95% gaming so I was thinking of going with LGA 1155 for the socket. I want to stay with Intel for the CPU. I’ve read a lot of back and forth on Sandy vs. Ivy Bridge so I don’t want to start another debate. I was thinking about a 3570k just to go with the newer tech since the prices are so similar. I’m sure either would be a great upgrade compared to my E8500. I’m not really a hardcore OC’er so 4.2-4.4 GHz with decent temps would be fine.

For GPU I was thinking about switching to Nvidia for this build. I don’t have any complaints about the AMD hardware but I was never a fan of their driver support, especially with new releases. I would like to start out with a single strong GPU with the ability to add another in the future when I need more graphical horsepower. I will be playing on a single monitor at 1920x1080.

Also, I've never had an SSD so I was thinking about trying one out for a boot drive. I don't have a firm budget but $2000 seemed like a nice round number and I don't want to go too crazy. There isn't a Microcenter near where I live so I will be buying everything on Amazon and Newegg. And I don't really want to sit around for a month waiting on stuff to come in stock so I would like components that I could buy in the next week or so.

Here is what I have so far:

CPU: Intel i5-3570k (newegg, $239)
  • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 (newegg, $89)
  • TIM: ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 Thermal Compound (newegg, $8)

GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 670 2GB (newegg, $399)

MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth Z77 (newegg, $239)

RAM: G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2x4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) (newegg, $59)

Storage:
  • Crucial M4 2.5" 128GB SSD (newegg, $124)
  • SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 RPM HDD (newegg, $109)

PSU: CORSAIR Professional Series HX750 750W (newegg, $149)

Drive: ASUS 24X DVD Burner (newegg, $17)

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM (newegg, $99)

Case: NZXT Switch 810 Black ATX Full Tower (newegg, $169)

Monitor: ASUS VH236H Black 23" 2ms LCD Monitor w/ Speakers 300 cd/m2 20000 :1 (ASCR) (newegg, $169)

Current total: $1882 (Newegg Wishlist Link)

Questions:
  • Will 750 Watts be enough power to have headroom for OCing, another GPU in SLI, and more hard drives in the future?
  • Any reason to get 16 GB of RAM for gaming? (Pros/Cons of 2 vs. 4 DIMMS?)

I'm hoping that my mouse, keyboard, headphones, etc. are still in working order but I haven't tested everything yet. I also hope to salvage the hard drives from my old PC if they still work. I'm fairly sure my monitor still works as well but I want to get a new one anyway.

Sorry for that wall of text. Suggestions/advice would be appreciated!

Looks good, sorry about your last build! Damn Lightning!

As for your questions, that PSU will handle 2 670's and plenty of hard drives with plenty of OC headroom to boot with ease!

And 16 GB of ram is almost useless unless you're planning on using a RamDisk or using some heavy Mem usage programs.

Good Luck, Nick

Nice build, 750 can handle 2x670. I think with more DIMMs OCing becomes more difficult, and you dont even need 16 in the first place.

Yes as others have said 750W is enough for adding another 670 in the future, and additional harddrives.

No real reason to get more than 8GB, unless you just want to fill the DIMM slots. From what I understand--if you're looking to get benchmark quality overclocks--then having 2 DIMMS (Usually low Memory, 1GB or 2GB each) can take the load off of the IMC enough to squeeze out a few more mHz. For everyday application I don't think it matters.

Parts-wise, your build looks stellar. Won't be disappointed with any of those components. thumb.gif

If you want to futureproof ahead of time and not run into the problem of being able to find the same type of ram get 16GB now as its so cheap. Then you can say you have 16GB haha. The others are right about it though...it wont do anything for performance. You could add another 670 and overclock both cards and your 3570k and still have headroom with that PSU.

:Enjoy your new beast! thumb.gif

Thanks for the help. I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything obvious since I'm doing this in a hurry and on my phone (lightning took out my DSL as well!)

I went ahead and ordered the Spinpoint F3 yesterday since Newegg had them marked down to $79 from $109. Still kicking myself for not stocking up when they were ~$50!

I'll probably order everything in the next day or two. Is there any advantage to sticking with Newegg over Amazon? I have Amazon prime with free 2 day shipping so if they are cheaper on some parts I may order from them unless there is a benefit to ordering from Newegg.

Amazon and Newegg are both good vendors, no advantage to either one that I know of.

The Gigabyte gtx 670 runs a little quieter than the MSI you are targetting (but I believe costs a little more). Both the MSI and gigabyte are quieter than almost every high end gpu released from 2007-2010.

I'm a fan of the low profile samsung ram, but I run mATX sized rig. Since you are standard/full size the G.Skill is likely just as good or better price/value ratio.

Yeah the MSI was a bit of a placeholder since a fair amount of the 670s were out of stock. In my reading it sounds like the EVGA, Gigabyte, Asus, and MSI brands are the top picks at the moment so I will probably try for one of those when I order.

My two 4870s with the fans cranked up were pretty loud so anything new will probably sound amazingly quiet! biggrin.gif

EDIT - Saw the ASUS GTX670-DC2T-2GD5 GeForce GTX 670 2GB come in stock on Newegg so I impulsively grabbed one of those instead of the MSI. I will probably order the rest of the stuff later today.

Amazon has an infinitely more lenient return policy. Newegg has everything really hashed out about what qualifies as a valid RMA, and things like bent socket pins on a mobo they will not let you RMA. Amazon has a flat return policy on everything. Minimum of a 30 day return, some stuff has longer--and no restocking fee (that I've ever had to pay).

Definitely grab all you can from Amazon, if the price is better. (Again, this only applies to things sold directly by Amazon, not by resellers).

Storage:
  • Crucial M4 2.5" 256GB SSD (Amazon, $240)
  • SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 RPM HDD (Newegg, $80)

PSU: CORSAIR Professional Series HX850 850W (Amazon, $157)

Drive: ASUS 24X DVD Burner (Amazon, $18)
