Recommend me a Minimalist Case

Thread Starter
So basically, I was deadset on the Corsair 300R, but after looking at a few reviews, the case was just too flimsy for me to spend £60 on it. Moving on to the Corsair 650D, PERFECT (although 8 drive bays would be nice) and the USB 3.0 issue didn't bother me as I could buy a £8 adapter. Buying the 650D would have put me vastly over budget but when I like a case... I like a case and to hell with the budget biggrin.gif Anyway, after reading up about all the trouble with the front fan noise for the 650D, including the necessity to completely cut out the grill, thereby voiding my warranty...Not interested.

With the aesthetics of the 300R and the 650D in mind, I.E minimalist, as few curves and bulges as possible, can you guys recommend me a case for an ideal budget of £70, though reaching up to a maximum of £150 (though I'll reeeally have to like it to accept the price). The case needs to ideally support USB 3.0, but it must have 6+ drive bays, ideally 8+. This will be used as a file server / NAS, so while silence is preferred, as long as the price is not too extreme, I am fine with adding aftermarket fans.

I have looked at the Define R3 and Define R3 XL and functionally, they're perfect, however aesthetics wise I'm not too impressed and I can honestly say If I had to look at it for let's say 5 years in my room, I'd probably feel some buyers remorse if there truly is no better option for me. At this point I'm tempted to postpone the build till early july or as long as it takes really, pending a suitable case. All the hardware is selected and has been for some time now. I do take my cases seriously as, realistically, I will have them for the better part of a decade. Thanks.

Check out Lian Li's lineup of cases - i've built with quite a few of them, they are extremely well built and minimalist design

Don't rule out the 300R so quickly...or failing that take a look at the ARC Midi.

Ive built many rigs for customers with the 650D, roughly about 8-9, and I have not had a SINGLE issue with noise from the fans. Not a single one. You also have to remember, the majority of the people who have the motivation to write a review are the ones that have a problem with it. Rage and anger is a much larger motivation to share your experience with a product than being perfectly content with a product, scientific fact. So a majority of your time you will come across many more people hating on a product, saying they got a defect, or they aren't happy with a design aspect. Take negative reviews with a grain of salt for sure, in my past experience with Cosair, if there is a problem, they WILL fix it, and they will fix it fast. Like others said above, Fractal, Corsair, Antec (for the most part), and Lian Li are the ones I tend to turn to for minimalistic. Other cases which are worth a peek are Silverstone, they may be a little to flashy and "artsy" and "unique" with their case designs, making them stand out, but they are also very solid build quality, and once again, have great customer service. If there is a large volume of positive reviews, more than negative, I tend to just filter out the bad reviews. Sorry for the rambling, its late, and Ive had a long day.

Hopefully my advice helped somewhat, will definitely be checking in and following your progress! smile.gif If you have any questions, just throw them out, and we'll do our best to help ya out!

I would say pick a Fractal Design case. You could also consider the 550D, that is Corsair's answer to the R3.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352007 Decent cooling and cable management, your 8 drives bays are there.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352014 Similar cooling, slightly better cable management, VERY quiet, your 8 drive bays are there.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163190 It's a new case, innovative HDD cooling, I don't know much about the rest of the cooling, apparently, its good, tons of drive bays.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112304 It has Lian Li's great quality, aluminium, good cooling, fairly quiet, only 6 drive bays though.

I hope that helped. smile.gif
