Help me choose a graphics card(s)? - Page 2

get the 6850. At stock speeds the 7770 can match it but once you overclock it to 6870 clocks, it pulls away.
A stock 6850 can easily max out anything at 1400x900.

Here are some benches. The 6850 is always ahead of the 5830 by 5 fps at stock speed.

Pointless me overclocking it if it'll work fine for my resolution. I could up the clock in the future if I get a new monitor (doubt it though).

So pretty much a perfect card for this resolution for that price? The HD 6770 is around £60-70 and a HD 6790 is £80 I have found.

I am just not sure whether its going to be overkill and wasting my money on it?

Get the HD 6850. Games like BF3 can be maxed out on HD 6850 at 1440 x 900. You don't want to buy an underpowered card. always overprovision for future games. thumb.gif

Yeah your right, suppose I don't want to stress an underpowered card out either tongue.gif

Also, the card I am buying on Scan, isn't the cyclone version I just looked. They look totally different. It looks like some standard heatsink, take a look:

Yeah they are different. even overclockers has the same MSI HD 6850 model at 84 bucks. The heatsink looks ok. not great. but don't worry. HD 6850 does not generate a lot of heat. also MSI has 3 yr warranty smile.gif

Personally I would prefer this card by MSI:

http://emm.msi.com/admin/temp/templates/116/msi_r6850-pm2d1gd5-picture_3d2.png

Bit picky, but I would be getting more from my money, looks like a nicer card tongue.gif also the thing I also am a bit worried about is that the PCB may warp, whereas with a longer heatsink it'll keep the PCB straighter. With that heatsink type above its very small, so the PCB can bend easier because nothing is supporting it.

My HD 5830 has the flower type heatsink, and the end is warped. Whereas the reference model has that long sturdy heatsink to stop it warping as much,

How would a HD 6790 compare? On benchmarks it comes close to the GTX 460 and is better than the GTX 560 TI. It also is slower than the HD 6850 but much better than the HD 5770.

If I can get it cheap it can be overclocked to HD 6850 speeds, but if its same as HD 5830 it'll run anything at ease at 1440x900. HD 5830 hit a good 40+ fps at my res, I bet the chipset helped as it gives crossfire support.

I think I will see if I can get a HD 6790 first. Looks like a good card, not much power consumption compared to HD 5830

A HD 6790 is closer in perf to a HD 5770 / HD 6770 than a HD 6850. Its severely affected by the cuts in ROP from 32 to 16. plus you draw more power than HD 5770 / 6770. HD 6850 is your best option smile.gif

On the benchmarks the HD 6790 does sit between the HD 5770 and the HD 6850, some games it can nearly match the HD 6850. In Tomshardware benchmark it is quite a lot better than the HD 5770 in most games.

It's as fast as my HD 5830 nearly, but in the overclocking section on that link the HD 6790 matches the HD 6850 performance.

Seening as my HD 5830 did fine at my resolution, if I could get the HD 6790 at a good price it seems decent?

It is going for 50 pounds at the moment new on eBay, with two others of the same card from the same retail seller. If I can get it considerably cheaper it seems a good buy, since also in the future I could crossfire it cheaply?

I know the HD 6850 is in fact better, but I am hesitant on spending 85 pounds to be honest, when clearly the HD 6790 can do well.

If the card goes over 70 pounds the HD 6850 is the better buy.

I am looking for the best cheapish option smile.gif and the HD 6790 seems a good buy as its between performance, and it does have better tessellation than the HD 5830 because its based on barts board, so it should actually run OK for say Battlefield 3 compared to my old HD 5830.

As long as it can match that performance, life wise it should be fine? The extra money and performance of the HD 6850 isn't really needed when a lower card can max out anything at my resolution.

Wattage, its more than the HD 6850 yeah I know, its another HD 5830 suituation back in 2010, but it isn't as bad from performance point of view.
