M11x still relevant?

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a new toy. 11" laptop that I can game on. Nothing major, just D3/SC2 and a few fps.
The M11x at $1000 is stupid since that Sager NP6110 has a much better price and is better performance, but if the M11x could be had for $700-$800, would it still be a bad deal?

TIA.

The Sager NP6110 base model is only $800. 6110 vs M11x:

Weight - Sager wins, lighter by ~0.4 pounds
Graphics - Sager wins by a mile, 650M is about 40% faster than 540M. "Saving" $100 to lose 40% in graphics performance is throwing money away, IMO.
CPU - i5-2450M is a 2.5-3.1ghz dual-core. M11x's i5 option doesn't come close to that speed - I'm seeing 1.6-2.3ghz, which is about 30% slower.

If your budget is extremely strapped, disregard the above, an M11x R3 will suffice for basic gaming (then again, an AMD Trinity Sleekbook with A10-4655M will only be ~20% behind the 540M, and still would play D3 and SC2). Might not be fun when you get to CPU-bottlenecked games, but it could handle D3 and SC2 at 1366x768.

Alienware has discontinued the M11x and i guess they are just getting rid of the stock and, while its got some cool features, i think the Sager is the best option.

Also gaming on an 11 inch screen is not fun. trust me. I've got an m11x and its painful playing on that little screen.

I was aware that the M11x is discontinued, which is one of the reasons I figure I could get it pretty cheap. The other being that I feel I have pretty good bargaining power what with the NP6110 being the machine that it is at the price where it is. This laptops main use will be to leave at work for breaks. Sometimes I have two hours to wait around and fill my time, but my controller won't let me install any games on my pc there.

Since the M11x has been discontinued I figured I should consider it as an option now while I still can. I guess it comes down to whether or not Dell would want to play ball on the price. At what price point does the M11x seem like a better option, considering the most I will spend is $1k.

Just a little update if anyone is interested...

The Sager has the GT650M compared to GT540M
i5-2450M compared to i5-2467M
8GB compared to 4GB
Bluetooth internal standard compared to $20 add on.

To spec the M11x as close to the Sager as possible I upgraded the spec to 8GB (for 200 absurdly high dollars), added the internal bluetooth, and just for kicks added the Soundblaster interface. Total cost $1239 compared to $899 for the Sager.

I called Dell to see what they could do in regards to the high price of the M11x. After some humming and hawing, they reduced the price down to $1150, which obviously is still way to high. Honestly that is as far as the conversation went. Is there anything else that I can do to drop their price BELOW the Sager? Honestly, it's an inferior laptop and a superior price. It holds no bearing in reality for me to spend that much.

I had a Dell Alienware m17x. Nothing but problems and made worse by having to use dell drivers. Gaming is not ment for laptops, I recommend using a macbook for a laptop computer, excellent battery life, nice to look at, good screen, great kayboard and works well for everything a laptop is designed for.

Even without the +$200 RAM upgrade, the M11x would be more expensive. If anything, get a used M11x R3 for about $650. M11x R3 isn't worth a penny over $700 compared to the Sager NP6110.

If you're deadset on saving a few bucks over the NP6110, try the Acer TimelineX 3830TG. It weighs less than the M11x, has a 13.3" screen, faster i5, same graphics, and if you're lucky you can find it for cheap on a sale. No backlit keyboard, sometimes people have to ghetto-rig the cooling to keep the CPU from throttling/overheating, only 2 "cons".. but it'll do the job better than the M11x out the box. http://www.amazon.ca/As3830tg-6634-W7hp64-I5-2430m-Cache-1333m/dp/B005VULX64/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337828183&sr=8-1

Yeah I think I'll just put this to bed and go with the Sager. Money was never the issue for this one, but I'm still not going to pay $1150 for an inferior pc.
