It is about time they admit defeat, tho rather sad when I think back to all the amazing amd cpus I had back in the day.
I doubt they will ever fully recover from bulldozer, it was just talked up far to much.

Intel makes better products... AMD is a better company.

This article is waaay old and an epic repost. Why is it 11 pages long?

If CPUs becomes too expensive after amd quits the desktop market, then I'm sure gpgpu computing will gain support very quickly. We don't need to worry too much.

If AMD quits the desktop market (which won't happen), the US (and possibly others) government will be getting their hands into the situation.

sad to hear. never owned a AMD CPU. or rather AMD anything. (well unless you count ATI biggrin.gif) but it pains me to see basically AMD holding up a sign to Intel that says "feel free to monopolize". no competition. no pressure on the company to produce a "stellar" product. consumers will lose in the end.

but intel is swimming in money for R&D and you cant ignore that as a company.

Yeah. I started a thread when Bulldozer sank like a brick asking (rhetorically) if something like this would happen, ie, the possibility that AMD would save face (and wasted time) by dropping out of the consumer CPU domain in the near future, and was lambasted for it by a bunch of fools. Now, AMD themselves are hinting at something strikingly similar in concept to a withdrawal from that market segment, or, a radical reduction in R&D and production in that segment... So.

I'm going to assume nobody on this site knows what they're talking about from now on. Unless they're, like, Phaedrus. tongue.gif

AMD is NOT leaving the desktop market. They did not say anything of the sort.

not surprising. AMD hasn't had anything worth buying for the enthusiast since the Athlon FX in 2005
