[THW] AMD Backing Out of CPU Speed Wars Against Intel - Page 37

AMD needs to stop the increase in cores at lets say 8, and focus on per core performance. Thats why they always lose to intel.

From what I can tell, thats exactly what theyre doing. Theyre not adding any more cores to Piledriver or Steamroller but instead are concentrating on IPC. At least thats the jist I get from seeing their roadmaps and such. If a bunch of geeks like us know that, Im sure the guys at AMD do. wink.gif

Well, their financial analyst day had a slide with Steamroller bringing "increased parallelization," which could be taken as them adding more cores. From what we do know about Steamroller, it's going to feature more extensive rework than Piledriver.

AMD launched the 7970 @ $550 when it had no competition, and was forced to price drop by $80 when they had competition. For a couple weeks, they didn't want to drop the price either, as 680's were OOS.
IF BD was competitive, then Intel would've been forced to price drop, instead, demand went up for the 2500K, hence the price increase. BD's price went down by as much as $70 for the 8150, because demand is LOW, and was not selling at AMD's asking price. They HAD to price drop in order to compete with Intel's offerings.
This is all basic Economics.
Besides, the 2500K is STILL $219, same price as it was originally launched.

Order from Amazon and you can get it as low as $205 new:
http://www.amazon.com/Intel-BX80623I52500K-Core-i5-2500K-Processor/dp/B004EBUXHQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1338046332&sr=8-1
Those fortunate enough to have a Microcenter nearby, it's only $169 there.

So, what exactly are you complaining about?
TL;DR,I never said a thing about graphic cards. BD prices fell like a brick because the fanbois were raging that BD wasn't killing everyone and their mother.
Exactly, over $200 if you want a overclock-able Intel processor from a authorized/trusted retailer ( I'm not saying MC isn't but you cannot always trust Amazon),and not everyone has a Microcenter.

If you've been around computers for any period of time 200 dollars for a processor that is basically as fast as they come is not a bad price at all. And by 'fast as they come' I mean in gaming.

We're talking about AMD "the company" if you want to ignore that they overprice their products when they can, that's your prerogative. If you don't want to read and learn the absolute BASICS of how the pricing structure works, that's also up to you, just quit whining about it.

The difference between an i5-2500 and a 2500K is $10. OMG, the sky is falling!

$200 for the performance the 2500K provides is a GREAT deal, only hardcore AMD fans seem to have a problem with it.

uproar over what? Intel's prices haven't even scaled with inflation just as AMD's haven't. extreme editions were $1000 10 years ago and still are today. Even the AMD FX was ~$800 years ago. Since then prices have gotten cheaper or stayed the "same" across the board for both AMD and intel with complete disregard for inflation. They're practically gifting them away. Other than intel's extreme edition it doesn't really have any expensive consumer grade cpus. The only parts intel really makes that are expensive are high end 2p and 4p xeons which also haven't scaled with inflation.

The "expensive" parts are subject to the same as the cheaper. Each part has its limitations under the conditions. Each chip can be pushed, Higher end parts tend to have greater tolerances. As for cpus the high end and mid range cpus all come from the same wafer and theoretically are all the "same" cpu. cores are just locked by intel. a 3820 is the same chip as a 3960x, but with locked cores. If the cores were somehow unlocked it is quite unlikely that the 3820 could hit the same speeds as a 3960x bc it was chosen to be a 3820 by intel due to its lack in quality by comparison. The only time that really wasn't true was dealing with the first gen i7s where the 920 was different from the 980x, but from launch it was the same cpu as the 975 with just locked multiplier. I used to be a lot more risky with my cheaper parts. Getting a 920 to 4.6 was great fun and nearly stress free. Pushing higher end hardware causes heart attacks every time something doesn't work right.

yup. Exactly why I don't have a 2687w. It's not worth $1900 to me, but for someone that does tons of rendering it definitely is because that person will make the extra cost of the processor back in increased efficiency gains.

mm!ill try! since amd baught ati they have been on a project.the goal?make a computer work in a gogpu fashion.took them a very long time and its yet unclear if its a good idea .yes on a conventional cpu gpu bd isnt flying as high as intel .but:rememember this is cpu is intended from the ground up to be used in a gpgpu config.and the classic way in amd is there only for compatibility.this is why all the result are screwed .because basicly they have been testing the cpu in its unintended mode(compatibility)and every tester ignored the gpgpu way because benchmark are non existant and intel didnt have a counter on that front so ot was ignored.so nobody know the capability of bulldozer or piledriver in its intended mode (as a gpgpu)we should get result soon tho cause ib does gpgpu as soon has the official driver for it is release testing of gpgpu will start
