EVGA 670 FTW or Gigabyte 670 for SLI

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Looking at getting either 2 EVGA GTX 670 FTW or 2 GIGABYTE GTX 670's for SLI. I have heard pretty even responses for advice, so I'm making a post here.

My current build is here, with the 2 EVGAs as placeholders until I decide.

I will be going for the HAF 932 and the ASRock mobo listed on the wishlist (here for those that don't feel like looking at the list)

If you have comments on other portions of the build (besides the GPUs, case, or mobo), please feel free to head on over to my other thread where I had help making the build: http://www.overclock.net/t/1259493/how-does-my-gaming-build-look-update-2-0-2000

A few notes:
- I am limited to one monitor now, but will be getting a second very soon (after I get a new desk)
- I have about $2000 to spend, any less and I won't be getting change back for future upgrades. I can use more, if you guys feel that there is something that would help a ton.

Thanks a ton in advance!

I would go with the EVGA gtx 670 FTW because it has a better cooler and better components than the reference cards, but mostly because it has a higher power target (I believe it is around 140-150% where as a stock or SC version has 122% I believe). Plus it has higher stock clocks which could mean is it binned, but I have no actual evidence to back that up, just a theory.

Go take a look and compare.

So is the GIGABYTE considered a reference card? I've read that the GIGABYTE has a better cooler than the regular EVGA 670, but is this not the case with the FTW edition?

Maybe I should note it, but this would be the gigabyte with the huge cooler tongue.gif

Thanks for the advice,

Depends which giga's your refering too.
The OC version exhaust's hot air into the case.
On the other hand the EVGA's exhuast out the back, would be better.
But with the HAF932 no problem for either.

Yep, sorry about that I linked the gigabyte cards in the first post. Here it is just in case:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125423

If it is that version, what would be better for SLI in the 932 on that board?

This right here, if you are going to go SLI you would ideally want cards that exhaust air out the back, at least it will be better for your temperatures that way. I wish there was a FTW review to compare the difference between the stock cooling, gigabyte's cooling and the FTW edition cooling, because while from the outside they look to be very similar or even the same, the FTW version is supposed to have a better cooler than the stock card does.

Sounds good.

Another member mentioned that the effect won't be as large, because I have spacing between the two cards with that board. Even with the space, would it make that much of a difference?

Thanks,
Big Al

Thanks,

If you have a nice space between the cards there would only be a few degrees difference between a cooler that exhausts hot air out the back or one where it exhausts hot air out the back and into the case. Although the gigabyte card *should* run cooler than any card with stock cooling no matter the spacing as it is a superior cooler than the reference design. Although like I said before, the FTW edition might have just as good of a cooler or better than the gigabyte version but we won't know until a review hits.

Yes, I have a 3-4cm gap between my xfired cards on a Asrock Z77 Extreme4 and a 140mm fan mounted on side grill blowing at cards and there is still a 10-15 degree celcius difference between top and bottom card at idle.
When at load difference is only 6 degrees C
