Really enjoyed reading this article. If we shift the identity of the internet, ex: through limiting access, restricting what can be done with the internet and where one could go and what one could see, would that then also be destroying the internet? It would be like a person getting a severe whack to the head that changes their personality, is that still the same person?

It kinda sucks that the thing this article points to is a not well talked about on this site. The great firewall.

Now data is entirely frozen. Nothing can get anywhere, because all the roads, bridges, and traffic lights are in ruin. All that's left of the Internet is your office intranet, or the file-swapping in your dorm. The tiny shreds. There are nets, but none of them are inter.
But remember, to do this, you would've just completed the single most complex, sweeping act of destruction in human history. But with anything less, the Internet would still be kicking.

And that's what makes it so impossibly damn strong. Nobody will ever be able to pull off thousands of attacks around the entire planet at once, with one coordinated blast and chop. Unless you had a team of tens of thousands to strike everywhere at the exact same time, repairs would outpace destruction—this isn't a job for a lone wolf. Short of a thermonuclear apocalypse—which would lead to some bigger problems than Facebook downtime—we just can't damage so much stuff spread so widely. We just built it too well.

so I guess Chinese government should be a good candidate.

Interesting read, but who would actually want to destroy the internet? Because one way or another it benefits you.

If the net went down, like down for at least a month, pretty sure it would be catastrophic to the economy.
not only would Internet infrastructure be damaged, but im sure good ol tele communications would go down with it.
stock exchange is internet dependent?
bank transactions are internet/tele line dependent.

def would cause mass panic and lock up pretty much everyone's funds, need gas, food? all the money in your bank? good luck withdrawing, im sure there would be riots at the banks with people wanting to withdraw funds in order to purchase necessities. banks dont hold enough to allow everyone in a city/town to withdraw.
have fun getting paid by your employers lol.
but im sure after a week or two everything would go back to paper records and snail mail.

Fun to hypothesize, but kinda sickening in reality.
