Home made case

Hey guys,

Since I may need a new case to fit planned parts in, I've been researching them. Aluminium cases really have me intrigued, but they are all quite expensive.

I have access to a lot of tools and a big workshop, so I thought a home made case would be a neat idea.

I haven't gone into any detailed plans yet, this is just still ideas at the moment. I really like the look of the Silverstone TJ07, so something modelled around that would be amazing. The main objective would be clean and simple, and have enough space to fit everything I could ever want. It'd be full tower with a window.

Before I go and attempt this, it'd be nice to have some opinions from all you expert case modders. I have many ideas, so while I go and play around on Sketchup, I'd really like any tips, advice, and most importantly; links to anything similar to what I'm looking at doing. I haven't even found out the price of the aluminium sheet that would be needed, so this could all fall through quite easily... tongue.gif

Cheers!

Hi Ninja, have you considered using acrylic? There is a good bit of info here in a post from Syrillian ..

Whichever material you choose I wish you the best of luck, remember plan, plan, plan and measure twice cut once, I just recently made the 10mm mistake when doing a cut, gotta start measuring 3 times. mad.gif

Thanks man! +Rep

I will most likely go with aluminium and either leave it raw or powder coat it. If not, I'll consider acrylic. I have access to metal folders and guillotines, so aluminium would be a good choice. Also, with aluminium, it should come out nice and clean, but acrylic looks damn cool as well.

I've spent the past few hours on Sketchup, and the hardest thing is finding all the measurements for the I/O shield/PCI slot part. I'll probably just end up measuring my current case.

If anyone can find me the measurements for the I/O Shield and PCI slot assembly, I will be eternally grateful!

Thanks man! +Rep. I've been looking through the form factors website for a bit now, so that was helpful.

I just found this, which gives me models already made in Sketchup! I'm not sure if you could help me get metal, as I'm in New Zealand, but I'd sure appreciate your help if I ever when I need it!

Good luck with your project, you should definitely make a build log for it. It's always entertaining to see a craftsman build a custom case thumb.gif

I've always wanted to do my own build log. tongue.gif

I'll still have to research the price of alu sheet, hopefully it's not too much, although I have a general idea.

With just standard woodworking tools you will be able to create aluminum cases. Here are some that I've built (and am currently building):

Those are absolutely amazing! Do you have a build log for any of them? Also, where do you get the extruded corner bits from?

Do you have any Google Sketchup files of your designs? I won't be copying them, I just really need the measurements for the motherboard tray, IO shield and PCI slot assembly. You have given me many great ideas, and I feel much more confident in building a case now!

Thank you so much!
