But your right, its not 100%.

I thought they admitted if they keylogger is fast enough they can use the same authentication code that you typed in for a set perioed of time. Sure its a really small window but still possible. At least that was my understanding, could be wrong though.

That's exactly what they do. They set up a daemon on your computer that pings their computer whenever someone logs in with an account with an authenticator attached. Their program does the rest.

I got an authenticator prior to launch. Haven't had any of the problems. It's just a matter of simple security. Thank you my android phone app <3

Yes, but I'm also saying I disagree with your assessment on what Blizzard is paying per device. Since your estimate for shipping cost was based on how much you thought each unit cost, I'm just further clarifying that I agree the shipping is still more than the cost of the unit.

However if there is something that's a compromise to the game, I don't think they' openly admit to it without having a plan in place.
ADD: For those that don't have an authenticator you might want to check out http://code.google.com/p/winbma/
But be aware of the security implications of having your authenticator on your PC.

This would be awesome, but like you stated if someone is getting hacked their PC is already compromised (more than likely). Which would make installing this on their PC totally useless. The bigger issue here in my opinion is people not taking account security seriously. If they would take a little time to learn how to not get malicious crap on their computer in the 1st place this type of thing would be an almost non issue.

Glad we cleared that up...

Someone else worked it out and it's about $0.90 per piece @ volume. Large volume, simple electronics are very, very cheap to make and most companies are making 100% or higher profit margins when still selling them cheap as a can of beans.

Why do people complain when a company offers increased protection for its clients? Weather it be for a game, your OS, your portfolio, identity or whatever.

The point is it's an option. In this case you even get a free option if you have a smartphone (Android/Iphone)

I see all these reactionary claims that it's Blizzards fault. Uh no... its your fault for your computer being compromised 3 months ago for going to some shady site and not using proper security.

Security is a reactionary business. The criminal is always finding new ways to outsmart current technology. At least do the basics of computer security. Can't count how many times less computer savvy people told me they had antivirus, etc only to find out it expired on them 2 years ago.

To those who complain about the cost of the physical authenticater are also crazy. I used to sell guns in retail. People would always ask why they should purchase gun X at $500 when they can go to a trade show and buy gun Y for $150. My response was "How much is your life worth?". Again in this case, how much is your game and game time worth? Mine is worth at least the measly $6 for the authenticater.

I would be more concerned with your online banking accounts if your D3 account was compromised.

Ahh /end rant.

aion has an autenticator and i bet they can say the same, but you need to pay extra for it its included in the game via a 8 digit keypad that work only via mouse!
Most of the time when a person "gets hacked" it is their own fault. They most likely torrented a game that had a keyloger attached to it, or followed a link to a site that resembles battle.net and put in their information willingly. Blizzard says it them selves "A Blizzard employee will never ask for your password" so just dont respond to those spamers that send you a message ingame telling you "You won something go here and login to claim" lol. I have had my battle.net account for 7 years without a authenticator and have not been hacked because I pay attention when a site ask me for my password and I dont download things I am not supposed to. biggrin.gif
