Time for a new PSU [AX750 or AX850]

Hi everyone, I have a bad experience here. I bought Ultra X4 1200W power supply from someone on craigslists for $150. I knew I have made a very bad decision because some people said the psu is a nightmare. But then after 3 months or so, my computer just can't boot. I thought it was motherboard problem [Asus p8p67 deluxe] then I bought a used Asus Sabertooth p67 at ebay while waiting for the Asus p8p67 deluxe to be rma'ed. Still the same problem occurred where the motherboard posted cpu led error. Then, I RMA the cpu as well and bought a i3 2100 to test and it works just fine for the couple of minutes with the sabertooth. But then, I saw a very high temperature in the BIOS ~85C. I thought I was putting incorrect order for the stock cooler and decided to take it off and reinstall it. Then after putting it all together again, my system just cannot boot again. I feel really bad and messed up. The dram led is the first thing that lighted up and I try to boot with 1 stick of ram. unsolved. Use no ram and boot - looong beep. And for the third trials, even boot with no ram stick, it doesn't make loong beep as it does before. I'm really tired of this. I can't afford to lose more motherboard and cpu again. This drives me crazy. So, after a few hours thinking and searching internet, I'm pretty sure my f%k^&g PSU eats every components that I putted with. I'm so sad, and feeling down. The last thing I could do is to buy a new powersupply.

Sorry to make you guys to read all of these crap. But I just wanted to share and someone to hear my bad story. Because I feel really bad right now. frown.gif

So, back to the question, I wanted to buy a new PSU for these kind of hardware.

CPU- i7-2600k [wanted to OC to 4.8~5.0]
Mobo- Asus Sabertooth p67
RAM- Corsair Vengeance 1600 1.5v 8gb
HDD/SSD - crucial m4 (64gb) - os
Samsung f3 spinpoint 1tb
[maybe wanna add 256gb crucial m4]
GPU : wanted to buy 2x GTX 670 with slight OC
Cpu custom liquid cooler: mcp355 pump with 2x ex240 radiator

Thanks for your concern guys. Really appreciate it!

Is this even good compared to AX750?

It's more or less the same design built with mostly the same components. Corsair contracts Seasonic to make AX850, AX750, and AX650 based on Seasonic X Series power supplies. AX750 has flat modular cables and 2 years longer warranty though.

With just Sandy Bridge and two cut-down GK104, with those kinds of overclocks, you'll have trouble pushing too far above 500W, particularly in anything outside of synthetic stress tests, much less 750W. But X750 for $120 is a good deal, so you may as well get that if you can afford it, and you want to have modular cables. 650W is already way overkill.

seasonic makes corsairs PSU's.

A 650w unit would do just fine, but that's a nice price on that x750.

Some, not all. In this case yes, it's a Seasonic re-brand.

Agreed, Get the X 750. Don't wait, sale ends in under 12 hours, & it may very likely sell out before then.

I own a Corsair AX850 and it is an excellent psu. But I have also owned or installed into others computers Silverstone, Seasonic, OCZ and many Antec psu's. All have worked perfectly without a single failure. I think 750w is enough, but an 850 gives more head room and won't use any more power. I might be wrong, but I think at a given efficiency they only use what is needed. So a 750 would use the same as an 850.

One thing I am not a fan of with my AX850 is that the fan doesn't always run and the psu case gets warm. Never experienced that before, nor have I ever heard a psu fan before. So I would prefer a psu with an always on fan. Unless you are choosing the AX line for the sleeved cables (which is why I did), also consider the TX750M or TX850M - quality product, but less cash.

Hope the psu solves the problem thumb.gif
