I don't think I'll be impressed until they can emulate the human conscious and a sense of smell.

Wow only 5 years for computers with human senses. Also I don't think a transistor with 2 states is equal to a neuron, but computers that could think would exponentially increase our ability to research new advanced technologies could be cool if I was alive to see this.

a neuron is on or off!i think the main difference is the brain can adapt, one neuron dies another take its place and it learn!would it be possible to make a computer work in similar ways to our brain?yes but why bother?unless they plan to use the new way someone discovered you could use human dna to make some kind of trnasistor witch open a path to computing a la startrek (borg come to mind)but it is a dangerous area!why ?we dont comprehend the full might and capability of human brain and we want to unleach this to the computing?what if we unleach something so self aware we would feel like the dinausore within a year after its release!and as we know once a thing is out it cant be put back to unknown status (nuclear bomb come to mind)so i am sorry but biological computing should be illegal on pain of torture!not death why?to make sure that people are so scared it never happen!this is something too powerfull theoricly, and with our research in light to make new kind of computer, imagine this;a biological computer that would use light instead of our regular way!speed of light thinking but in a computer!hell no!as good as it sound, i dont want any biological researcgh done in a the light biological computing field!if they ever discovered a biological thing that could use light as info pathways the ramification in the long run would be disatrous i suspect.

true for now its all theory but i recall a time when captain kurk in startrek had a communicator ,we all laughed back then caause we had the old rotary phone lol.in the 90s they came with that communicator ,they called it a cellphone and the rest is history!

so no i dont doubt for a minute that it is possible to compute biologicly via light ,but i dont want it to happen!

... on a serious note:
i think the main problem we're going to run into(eventually) will be the ethicality involved in restricting something that may be near or even superior to our level of intelligence and awareness.
if i knew there was an off switch on my butt, and that someone was in a constant position to shut me down, i'd definitely feel a little hurt.

exciting days are to come.

Meh, quote is misleading. Current technology requires the power of a laptop to accurately simulate a single neuron...so having more transistors on a chip than neurons in the human brain isn't particularly exciting.

Agreed on all counts.

I'm hoping to do computational neuroscience research next year during my master's, and hopefully follow that up with a PhD at some point. This is very, very relevant to my interests.

Not to worry, the Reapers are waiting out there just in case we let AI get too far ahead of ourselves.

Great idea, actually.

Make computers ALMOST as smart as humans, but take away their free will. Make them be able to produce and work for us for the cost of electricity, and allow us humans with no use for currency and unlimited time on our hands do too things....

1) Be free-loaders, and do absolutely nothing for eternity
2) Better ourselves to advance our race.

1) would be better at sustaining our lazy ass's, option 2) would be great, until we accidentally create a machine with feelings, and they realize they're our slaves, and kill us all.
