Apple has famously shunned the humble stylus, so it's fair to say we're more than a little curious about why it's filed a patent application for one. The "optical stylus" mentioned seems simple enough. The claims outline the brains to interpret your doodlings, as well pressure and orientation. Beyond that, well, it's more or less just a stylus.

According to the filing the optical stylus could be used in a wide variety of Apple products, such as the iPhone or iPad, and is pressure sensitive. The description reads that when “the optical stylus is in contact with a surface based on signals received by a processor from a pressure sensor of the optical stylus.” In addition, similar to Samsung’s S Pen, Apple’s “optical stylus” pending patent also has the ability of “capturing an image while the optical stylus is in contact with the surface.”
Can’t see Samsung sitting still on this one very long, their lawyers are already drawing up court orders. Or, we’ll see some patent trolls pounce on this one. This changes everything, again.

Let me get this straight, the Galaxy Note uses the S pen, and has the functionality of “capturing an image while the optical stylus is in contact with the surface.” Yet, Apple doesn't have any products with a Stylus and THEY want to patent Samsung's use?
Didn't Apple say the Stylus is dead and no one wants it or needs it?

Q: How do you close applications when multitasking?
A: (Scott Forstall) You don't have to. The user just uses things and doesn't ever have to worry about it.
A: (Steve Jobs) It's like we said on the iPad, if you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager... they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.

This is Apple's Patent Trolling at its finest.
LOL at some of the comments on MS.

Apple: This S pen thing is actually a good idea. Let’s patent it and sue samsung so they have to stop selling it.
Apple sez: It’s innovation when we copy Samsung. It’s copying when Samsung innovates.
