He's not in the best position financially and was already hurting from the tuition/fees, and then they wanted him to buy a $2,000 laptop to run Photoshop on top of it all. Even more ridiculous when you consider the following:
1.) Windows PCs are just as capable as Macs for running Adobe software and at lower prices
2.) The Cinema Displays that the school uses are advertised as "zomg IPS" but have a narrower colour gamut because of the LED backlighting, making them inferior to a CCFL based Eizo or NEC pro display.
3.) See 1.
4.) See 2.
Really, there is no practical reason to use Apple for "creative stuff" and schools that do this might as well pour gasoline on their money and light a match.

This. Macbooks have TN panels and Apple monitors are crap compared to what you can get at a fraction of the price. There's no reason to get an Apple computer to run Creative Suite on other than sheer and complete idiocy.
EDIT - I should say I think the Universities requiring it are idiots, that's really awful to do to students. If someone has money to burn and that's what they want, that's their choice, as long as they realize that they're paying more money for a technically inferior product for the task at hand.
