He's not in the best position financially and was already hurting from the tuition/fees, and then they wanted him to buy a $2,000 laptop to run Photoshop on top of it all. Even more ridiculous when you consider the following:

1.) Windows PCs are just as capable as Macs for running Adobe software and at lower prices
2.) The Cinema Displays that the school uses are advertised as "zomg IPS" but have a narrower colour gamut because of the LED backlighting, making them inferior to a CCFL based Eizo or NEC pro display.
3.) See 1.
4.) See 2.

Really, there is no practical reason to use Apple for "creative stuff" and schools that do this might as well pour gasoline on their money and light a match.

This. Macbooks have TN panels and Apple monitors are crap compared to what you can get at a fraction of the price. There's no reason to get an Apple computer to run Creative Suite on other than sheer and complete idiocy.

EDIT - I should say I think the Universities requiring it are idiots, that's really awful to do to students. If someone has money to burn and that's what they want, that's their choice, as long as they realize that they're paying more money for a technically inferior product for the task at hand.

Interesting video.

To quickly address the Apple Vs. The World debate:

I'm in a different boat than most others. I'm not a fan of Apple as a corporation at all. I despise them. Their patent trolling is what really bothers me. I feel it's completely unethical what they've done, and it's setting a precedent that will only end up screwing the consumer. Also, I'm not a fan of their proprietary, non-service friendly construction. Unlike the vast majority of PCs, changing hardware components on a Mac is made far too difficult even though they share a common Intel platform.

However, I truly think they have a superior user experience. I've owned many Android phones and a few iPhones. I prefer the iPhone for it's reliability. Yes, I wish the scree was larger, it had a removable SD card, HDMI out or.....well, I really had much of a choice in the variety of hardware, but in all honesty, it just works. Period.

I think the best comparison would be PC gaming vs. Consoles.

Androids are the PCs. :
Lots of choices. Lots of customization. The tremendous flexibility and considerably higher performance comes at the price of vastly increased complexity from an OS standpoint and there are the to-be-expected occasional hiccups.

iPhones are the Consoles:
You have VERY limited choices as to what to use (3GS, 4 or 4S) but there are no drivers to worry about, no crazy specs to compare, no compatibility issues.....You want it to do something, it just works. You don't have to scour the forums or do research. Hit the button. It does it's thing. Maybe not the fastest or fanciest, but it looks pretty good aesthetically and you can (usually) rely on it.

That being said, I think the potential for an Apple TV to find a niche is high. Imagine a TV that just dumbs it down. I know, it's JUST a TV but the sad reality is, my father (who I'd like to consider quite intelligent) had to call me to come over and setup a Blue Ray Player and Roku. I anticipate that, somehow, Apple is going to make this about as easy as "Plug, Push, Watch". That's what they do. Sure, it'll be over priced. I'm sure the screen quality will be great, but not worth their asking price. But....that's how it works. If people didn't like it, they wouldn't be so stinkin' rich. They do something right....and the user experience is it.

Riiiiiiiiiight. Unless you're holding an iPhone 4 wrong because of a design issue that forced a lawsuit for Apple to properly address it with their "stellar" customer service. Or you have a 1st generation iPod Nano that has a battery that could overheat that forced a recall. Or you had an iPad 2 on Verizon that had connectivity issues that forced a recall. Or you had a MacBook Pro that had the faulty Nvidia graphics cards, or bad hard drives, that have forced recalls over the last decade. Or you visit websites that use Flash with an iPhone. Or...

I was speaking about the User Experience working. Note, later in my post I even put "(usually)" in regards to their hardware reliability. I'm well aware they've had their issues, as just about every single other manufacturer has. Also, for the sake of accuracy, Nvidia was responsible for the huge GPU debacle technically, but it was Apples crappy business ethics that made the entire situation really messy. So was the issue with the iPhone 4 reception. The design was easily changed in hardware but their CRAPPY business division did a piss-poor job. As far as Flash not working, that was a very intentional choice.

I'm not claiming that they're perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Quite the contrary, however I feel that you're not getting the point of what I was trying to state. Again, their User Experience just works. Also, if you'd like to make a point, probably not starting off with a "Riiiiiight." Will make you seem like you're responding and not reacting. Responses are welcome. Reactions aren't products of careful consideration.

P.S. - I don't understand why there's SO much attitude and condescension in responses on here. People get snotty and I just don't get it.... I've been seeing it more and more on here and it really makes me a lot less likely to contribute.

Innovation is when you take an existing idea and improve upon it. Apple's done that with the iPhone, iPad, and even other ranges too.

ya because thats the reason people hate MAC...because they havent used them correctly? Please explain....I had a macbook for 3 years during college (got it for free through my moms office and it was recommended that we use a mac rather then a widnows PC) and I cant tell you this...I used that comptuer for everything but it doesnt do anything better then a windows machine. They are very pretty yes....so hipsters and "people who are blind to whats out there" will buy defend it and flame me for that but I can pick a windows based machine that can do the same.....and if its a question of the OS then fine, but you can buy the OS for about 60 dollars I believe (last i heard, havent checked lately) and it will run any pc....so that cant possible make up the difference in price between others......can it?(sarcasim)

My 4th year my laptop was stolen along with the radio from my car, my Zune, 150 dollars out of my gym bag so I had to buy another computer....I went out and spent 1100 dollars on an ASUS laptop(went a little crazy becuase I wanted to game on it as well).....and since I still had all my stuff from my apple laptop I was able to use that version of OS as a duel boot on the ASUS.......perfectly.....later I priced it out and the Apple laptop I had was priced at 1500 dollars....and was half of what my ASUS was........are you kidding me? Never again Apple.....

The fact they are getting into TV's is going to be a joke...they are going to take the same stuff thats been around, pain it white and every technology hipster is going to jump all over them because its so pretty......Im sorry but I waiting for the first Apple Television to hit stores and people rush out to buy them and start saying how "apple does it better"....no...all apple does better is market to people and convince them that they need to buy apple.....just look a the iPhone its been behind android phones for the last 2 iPhones yet people rush out to buy them without actually taking the time to read and learn about new and better products.....the only thing the iPhone has "innovated" since the first iPhone(ill give the first phone to apple, they were the first to bring out that type of smart phone and start the smart phone revolution) but if i hear one more person try and tell me the iPhone is better then my Galaxy Note or the Galaxy S2 or any of the recent android phones im going to fire them into the sun.....

sorry about my rant but im sick and tired of hearing about how "OMG WOW APPLE IS SO AMAZING" but people wont actually open their eyes.....sad really....

There is no user experience if the hardware is kaput, or you can't use it to do simple things like visit a website because it lacks capabilities, or you can't make a phone call even when the device is working properly due to poor design. I just can't help but scoff - especially when the statement is qualified with a "Period." sentence (which also means you are the pot calling the kettle black by criticizing my "Riiiiiiiiiight.") - at someone saying the user experience is fantastic when customizability is a user experience, inferior hardware affects the user experience, and lack of capability diminishes the user experience. It's the same way that I scoff when someone says Apple has great customer service when, aside from the issues I mentioned previously, most of their questions are going to be ridiculously stupid ones from people who know next to nothing and thus will be easy to solve; of course those people will be grateful!

Why do people get snotty? It should be fairly obvious...
1) Apple's business tactics result in oversaturation of the market due to the usually-ignorant consumer not knowing there are better options for far cheaper. As a result, for example, I can only get voice recognition and album art for my music with my car's head unit (or any other head unit for what it's worth) if I use an Apple product. That's the type of behavior that got Microsoft in trouble yet Apple escapes worry free from persecution.
2) Apple is the poster child for tax evasion. They are a perfect example - and were in fact a template for other companies to follow - in how the mantra that big business create jobs is total horse crap. Responsible big businesses create jobs, but Apple is too worried about profit to take care of their communities. They are not responsible.
3) Apple has found a way to take advantage of the general population's stupidity. Everywhere I look I am reminded of the average person's ignorance in regards to many things, but when their choices affect my choices, it pisses me off. It pisses me off even more that the aura surrounding the company is so pristine despite all the reasons to hate the company.
4) Their ads are misleading at best. See item 3. I despise being lied to. Sure, other companies do it, but I despise them for the same reason; I refuse to buy a Ford because those commercials with Mike Rowe are so ridiculously misleading.
5) They rarely admit their faults. It's always the consumer's fault, or the manufacturer's fault. When is Apple responsible for quality control of their products? When they are forced to be by a frickin' class action lawsuit when all people wanted were free rubber bumpers for their phones to make it work!
6) Need I continue?
