[TechSpot] AMD Piledriver Production Begins Q3

Quote:
Citing information from "industry sources", TechPowerup reports that the next generation of AMD FX processors will be in production during Q3 of 2012. While the wheels of production are expected to spin up for high-end FX desktop CPUs later this year, it was hardly a week ago that AMD announced the launch of its Trinity APU.

Glad I held off on BD, PD looks like a nice upgrade for my Phenom II 965.

Interestingly, Fudzilla predicted this last December.

I agree, I'm waiting on PD to replace my 955.
here's hoping PD isn't nearly as disappointing as BD was.

-e- 10% bump. never mind.

I will be a happy camper if we can eek out a 10% gain on single threaded apps!

I dont care about a 10% gain on multi threaded puke.gif

Considering they still have 8 cores, the 10% improvement with multi-threaded tasks probably comes from a 10% IPC/IPS improvement.

This article has it wrong... the architectural improvements are 10%, with clock speeds gained from RCM contributing another 10%. Pretty sure Anandtech stated this, plus it's already proven itself with Trinity.

10% overall is pretty damn low, considering process maturity would give a significant chunk of that 10%.

The interesting part of this chip should be with overclocking. With the redone flip flops and RCM, this thing theoretically will overclock much higher than Bulldozer. I'm thinking under LN2, we'll crack the 9GHz barrier.

This was supposed to launch in Q3, as per AMD's financial analyst day 2012. I guess a Q4 launch isn't so bad though (assuming production in Q3 translates to a Q4 launch), seeing as it's still a quick turnaround from Bulldozer.

The important thing, regardless of everyone's personal opinions, is that power consumption is being significantly decreased. That was Bulldozer's Achilles' heel. Such a power reduction would do wonders for AMD's standing in the server market.
