Hey peeps... I have another head scratcher for you.

So far I have RMA'd the mobo and the RAM. I decided to give him the MSI PSU, better then the cheap-o crap right? I ruled out a shortage in the case. I have ruled out the PSU (underpowering). Some people suggested that the HD is frying. I think I'm gonna have to go with that one. When the comp is on, the HD is really trying to do something. I dont know what, but the head is moving like crazy. I did take it out of the case, tried another HD, and cleared the CMOS. It worked! For only about 5 min. The comp is sitting right next to me out of the case, please help.

He is in town and would like to take it back tomorrow, but that may not happen if I have to RMA something else.

The HDD is not at fault. I tried it w/o the HDD and it still had the same symptoms. I'm getting annoyed.

does it have onboard vid? Sounds like a vid card to me, run into that alot with my job at computer troubleshooters.

I tried running it w/o vid, and it's a P chipset, it has no onboard vid.

I tried running just the mobo with CPU and RAM. Ran fine for a couple of seconds, then shut off. What gets me is that I had it running just fine the other day.

Throw a live Knoppix disk in it and see if it acts up, if not you have a software issue.
Unless it's the case switch and you have not tried bypassing it as I suggested.

I did bypass the power switch. Nope. And the knoppix suggestion cant work because the mobo sometimes doesnt POST.

Man that is screaming vid card or mobo.....any other expansion cards running that could be causing a short?

edit: also is it a passively cooled x300? those things are bad about overheating, I had one that if you put your finger on the heatsink it would burn the mess out of you.

No, just the vid card. I have it running bare with just the CPU RAM and the vid, also one keyboard (self explanatory).
