Good to know we're like minded in one area of problem solving! tongue.gif

( edit )

I would imagine that top and bottom you would want more travel while the side springs would have much more tension to disperse the initial impact and quickly stabilize the unit. But that would mean that the system is dynamic and would only suffice if dropped on its bottom end and wouldn't provide the same dispersion if dropped on its front or side. frown.gif

Hrm... dilemma eh? thinking.gif

I think you would be able to build the outer cage of some L-stock, then mount the shocks from the corners to hold the internal box. You may want to think about some way to make all the connectors act like Apple mag-safe connectors, or that snagged cable issue could become the failure point of anything that has a cord coming out of the box.

couldn't you get some of Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

this stuff to hold the heavier components directly to the chassis to reduce the damage to the mobo on impact?
Natrually using a material just like the case so we don't have to worry about electricity, magnetism or heat that much.

Also, Could you install the motherboard so that instead of being held by the screws its also held into the case itself kind of like the glass in a picture frame?
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Mobo goes in the white part but is level with the frame which is part of the case. I'm assuming this is a custom case from scratch.

Interesting build, how do you plan to protect the cheap parts that break the easiest when dropped? Fans and CD drives are really bad at dealing with any kind of fall or large shock, obviously HDD are as well. Curious how this turns out.

We use these hardigg containers at work and they work really well, its the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread:

The reqs I've got are solid. I can't work around them. Mag safe would be cool for back IOs.

Yep, completely from scratch. Also, holding a mobo in by the sides would be a lil dicey. Sure if the board takes a hit underneath it'd be like IDGAF, but if it hits the side its wrecked. I don't see where you're going with that random lookin metal.

I know, its crazy. I just feel bad that updates are going to be LONG between. However I absolutely LOVE that people are giving input, love it.

No optical bay, fans, I'll probably be making my own fans.

It'd still have the screws and this way if it gets hit in the side the shockwave is taken by the whole system and not just the mobo by the screw points.

The random looking metal is supposed to be that metal strips with the holes in it for screws, I'm thinking you use that stuff instead of springs to connect the GPUs to the chassis from the top so they don't move nearly as much at impact.

Ah I see, the GPUs have to be removeable easily that's the thing. I thought that was an assembly not a pile of metal. And yeah the mobo plate is a 1inch thick piece of tungsten. It will take a LOT.

Not sure if this was discussed prior, but if you are contemplating strapping everything down HARD, like, concrete- almost hard to even move, may not be the smartest idea.

Instead of keeping everything solid, the shockwave would just continue to the next component in the selection, and whatever that next item may be, may end up being a pile of scrap.

Just an idea.
