Doing the Impossible? Upgrading a HP dv6 to a 1080 screen.

Thread Starter
I just bought a dv6-6c46cl and I'm waiting for it in the mail.

I had to buy it from Sams club or Wal-mart, and trust, it was the very best in my price range Sam's club and Walmart offered...it was only missing a WxGA++ or WUGA screen (ie, 900p, 1080p)

Specs core i7 2670qm
7690m xt switchable to 5gb
8gb ddr3
750gb HDD.
Blu ray/DVD multi
1366x720p

So I called up HP to see if they could give the part number to a screen from a DV7 or dv8 series that had a higher resolution screen...they were helpful, but I didn't get my answer.

I called up a laptop screen store and emailed a tech who gave me screens that matched what I needed. All I have to do is find a video cable from an HP that drives a 1080p screen.

So step 1.

Open up my screen and see which side the 40 pin connector is on right or left.

Step 2. Open up my laptop and identify the type of Audio Cable it is (stupid internet is giving me zero results so I have to check it myself)

Step 3. Buy the Video cable for a hp with a 900p plus screen that matches the video cable for my laptop

Step 4. Buy the screen

Step 5. replace the screen and video cable

Step 6. Prepare to jump for joy or kiss my warranty goodbye for nothing (I may be able to open it without tech realizing I tinkered around in there.

My other option is to return it, get a gift card and just wait for a laptop with the same specs and a better screen.

(PS. I checked out a couple of 900p screen next to 720p screen today....don't really see what the big whoop is, but I'm still going to try and upgrade just for the hell of it)

If the 900p screens you saw were 17.3", then they're just as poor as 15.6" 1366x768 displays. They make things onscreen large and have poor image quality due to low contrast.

Visit this thread for information about the cable: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-pavilion-notebooks/610177-hp-dv6t-display-replacement.html

To get a display, I would recommend the 95% color gamut AUO B156HW01 V4 (matte) or V7 (glossy). These 95% gamut displays are some of the best 15.6" displays available.

Matte: http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/screen-part-number/B156HW01%20V.4/
Glossy: http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/screen-part-number/B156HW01%20V.7/

Good luck with this! You'll definitely void your warranty! It's very hard to get inside a laptop without doing so.. Yet alone the screen! There will be something that will tell them that you've been in there!

As for the screen.. I'm fairly sure the DV9 has a bigger physcial screen then your DV6? Or have HP changed their naming scheme from DV6 being 16 inch (and under) and DV7 being 17 inch?

I really hope this turns out for you! You'll have to make a work log! thumb.gif

The warranty is not void if nothing is damaged in the process, and if the original display and cable are kept for reinstallation before using the warranty.

thanx for that info, that is really helpful. I have the part number for the Cable now.

Do you know how I can tell though which side my model's 40 connector is on...right or left before I get it and open it.

Update. I got my laptop after 8 days of shipping and it is incredible. I went to bios and turned switchable graphics to fixed and downloaded catalyst 12.2 per certified. I can play mass effect at 45 fps average.

The screen.....looks awesome. I but batman dark night in the blu ray, it looked fantastic. I'm thinking about ditching the screen upgrade.

I did open it up and my pin connector is on the left bottom looking at the back side. The cable an screen together will cost $138.

A blu ray burner will cost $150

And a hybrid 750gb hdd will cost $110

Can't decide which is more important. A second blu ray burner in the house sound usefull tough.

Hybrid disks aren't that great, it's an earlier form of SSD caching. As a result the drive spins up and down much more often, which can shorten the drive's life span. If you actually need your optical drive it might be a good solution though. I prefer to just rip DVDs onto my hard drive.

About the screen, if you upgrade it you probably won't get much use out of the higher res for gaming. Higher res means lower fps, so you'll either be turning all the settings down or you'll be using a lower non-native resolution.

It's nice for everything else though, I have a 15.6" 1600x900 screen on my laptop. My brother's laptop is the same size with 1366x768, I always feel like there isn't enough room on the screen.
On the flip side, more pixels also means things are smaller, so for me 1080p would be overkill on a 15.6" screen. But all this stuff is really personal preference.

Yeah, the 1366x768 on a glossy screen is fantastic so far. the HD video looks really really good. I was stressing over upgrading the screen so much and I couldn't really get a comparison, but I think I'll do this upgrade in like 4 or 5 months. The 5200 RPM HDD isn't that bad either, I guess as long as it's Serial ATA you cant tell a big difference in the RPM of the hard drives.

Boot up time is less than 40 seconds, everything is silky smooth.

I'm starting to think that people over exhaggerate the value of a SSD and HDD speed and performance too much.

People were obviously over exaggertating the value of the screen resolution. Im gonna just do the Blu Ray burner upgrade for now, and do the rest later, I would have loved to do a video tutorial though...but there is a DV6 dismantle video on Youtube, between that video, and the notebookreview forum post somebody gave me, it pretty clear how to do the upgrade.

Only thing I don't like, is the website say this thing is 6hr batter time, but on normal use at max it's only 3 hours.

I've decided to go ahead with the upgrade. The cable and the Screen are both scheduled to arrive on Monday.

I paid for the 96% color gamut 1080p screen and and it cost $104 total, and I bought the cable from partsufer with a 15% discount for $40, so the whole think came up to about $145 upgrade.

I'm gonna make a video of the upgrade and you tube it.

Well, I'm finished. Took me like 2 hours because I was trying to be extra careful.

I made a detail layout of the screws....al together there were about 60 screws. No dead Pixels...and the pictures look increadible.

However...the movies in 768 still look the same although i'm in 1080p now

my girlfriend didn't record me like she said she was, but I took a couple of pictures.
