Been shopping for a cheap Diablo III laptop for my wife.

I found an Acer with an AMD A8 quad core APU 1.5GHZ/2.4GHZ Turbo with 400 Radeon cores for less than $500. From looking at the Tom's Hardware Diablo III hardware review, it looks like it will play pretty well at the 1366x768 resolution.

I had an Acer laptop a few years ago. It was pretty nice.

Best option - wait till roughly mid-June for an AMD Trinity laptop to come out. Adds about 20% to the 6620G performance, and a similar gain on the CPU side.

This is the best bang/buck for a new system; though the Asus K53TA with A6 and 6650M is occasionally $420 refurbished on Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246328

Now, this HP dv6zqe has the best graphics in your budget; just upgrade the graphics to the 7670M and it's $575. http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Laptops/HP-Pavilion/A1M39AV?HP-Pavilion-dv6z-6c00-Quad-Edition-Entertainment-Notebook-PC

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Diablo-III-Benchmarked.74918.0.html The 5650 is within a few % of the 6650M, if not the exact same (I forget which). The 7670M is a lot faster. Either will do D3 on high. Either will do WoW on medium, and probably on high (if you want closer to 60 FPS, then just go with the 7670M, better yet, wait for Trinity).

HP Dv6/7/9xxx series laptops have chipset over heating issues. I would steer clear of them. Unless someone can tell me that they fixed it in the last year and a half. My laptop repairs were flooded with so many from those series it wasn't funny.

I was wondering this myself. My Brother-n-law came to me the other day and wanted a laptop for $400 that would play Diablo 3. I know nothing of mobile gaming hardware and I really dis-like laptops (over heat easy, hard to work on, 200 million screws holding it together, $$$ etc etc) Anyways, so I talked him into letting me build him a desktop.

I ended up building a budget i3-2100 paired with my old EVGA 8800GT 512 for him. On a 22" 1680x1050 monitor, it runs Diablo 3 at 60-100 FPS on max settings. I'm impressed.

If you can wait for an A10-4600M to release probably in mid-June, it will be absolutely perfect for medium at 1366x768. An A10 laptop should only cost $550-600. If you want something sooner, Nvidia 540M, 630M, or higher; or AMD 6630M, 7670M, or higher. The 6630M is just a little faster than the 5650M (seen on the graph), the Nvidia 540M is the exact same as the 630M. So for right now, A6-3420M, A8-3500M (or faster) for CPU, or Intel i5. See my previous post for a couple examples. At the $750 range, I'd go with a Lenovo Ideapad Y470p or Y570, although the Sager NP6165 with the Nvidia 650M is the best bang/buck gaming laptop in the $800-1000 range.

Thanks jrbroad77 - makes perfect sense on the wait but I'm actually away for a pretty long vacation and am itching to play. There's a Best Buy right near me. Should i pull the trigger on something there if it has the right hardware or stay away?

Pull the trigger biggrin.gif I know that feeling of wanting something right now. Current AMD A8 laptops with 6620G are just barely fast enough for D3 - you'll probably get around 35 FPS on medium. Best Buy doesn't have a great selection of laptops with midrange graphics - you'd have to spend $1000+ on an Asus G-series most likely to get something noticably better than an A8 (or $900ish, and by then you may as well get something with 50% faster graphics for $1-200 more). So I'd check what other stores are in the area - Microsoft Store, Fry's, Microcenter, even Sony Store (Vaio C for ~$700 with 6630M) would be decent. If you want something faster than A8 and there's no Microsoft/Sony Store, the best option would be to check with the hotel to see if you can get a package shipped there, and ordering a pre-built online with overnight/2-day.
