Time for an upgrade?

Hi all

So I'm thinking of upgrading my i7 920 co stepping rig which is now 4 years old. I am at 3.8 o/c but it sometimes plays up - have to reduce to 3.4 to get a stable o/c 24/7.

I was thinking about swapping like for like, if you will, by opting for the SB 3930k, but I've read that SB is 'dead' now that IB is out, whatever that means. I know Haswell is round the corner (well, mid 2013) but then there's the old adage (and a true one) that with that kind of thinking you will always wait.

There's nothing fundamentally wrong with my PC, other than I feel like I need to upgrade. Which sounds pretty silly but I can't think of any other way of puttng it. I went to an SSD last year which helped performance, but not by much, since my mobo throttles it. I went down the GPU path too, upgrading to a gtx 570 sli and that proved to be a very good investment.

Trouble is, swapping out the cpu means swapping out mobo, ram, and maybe even cooler.

I game mostly, but run benchmarks (not freakishly though) and also do some folding (not hugely though). If you were in my position and wanted to upgrade, what path would you take?

Many thanks

Coming from your position, I could give you this advice.

I switch from a i7 930 to a 2500k and was not impressed. Everything seemed almost to have a slight lag to it. It was not worth the upgrade.

Ivy bridge is a die shrink, and really offers nothing over sandybridge. Its on the same socket, and will run on the same chipset as sandy bridge. They run on 20 less watts. That about all I can think that Ivy has over Sandy.

Sandy-E however, is a whole other ball game. It is however going to be at least $750 to upgrade cpu/mobo/ram to switch to the 2011 platform. But, there will be an ivy bridge-e which may, or may not be what haswell is going to be shipped as.

I did not feel like the 2500k was a successor to the 930 I had. I also had a 3770k, but had it for less than 3 days before the system went belly up, so I have no point of reference.

However, all things in mind, do you currently need something better than your 920, or do you just want something. If its a need, I would suggest trying to find another cpu that will clock higher. i7 970 or better. If you want to upgrade, definataly go with the 2011 platform.

edit: heres a similar thread already open. maybe this will help you.
