Air Cooling with Ice Bath Option

Thread Starter
In preparing a computer for number-crunching, I decided to duct room air through a radiator into the chassis and through a respected processor air cooler. Usually, the radiator would be dormant, but when the most demanding operations are to be performed, chilled water from an ice bath could flow through it.

I began testing the system a couple hours ago and it is working like a charm. From the chassis temperature sensors and from the quad-core temperature sensors, all temperatures drop by at least 5 degrees C.

Motherboard: Intel DZ77GA-70K
Processor: I7-2700K
4.2 GHz with +20mV
Memory @ 1600
Air Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Case Fan: Delta AFC1212D-PWM
Fan/Temp Controller: Scythe SCKMPN-3000
Radiators. 2 each: Koolance HX-CU420V
In ice bath
Chassis rear
Water Pump: Danger Den DDCPX1
Nozzle Body: Koolance ADT-XUTX4
Reservior: Koolance TNK-80-V10
Clear Tubing: Koolance HOS-10CL
Ice Chest: 6-pack size, approximately

Software:
Core Temp
Prime 95

10 pounds of ice ($2) lasts for 2 hours.

One of the number-crunching programs (related to predicting flood hazard zones) uses all cores & all threads, and runs continuously for 2 to 4 hours. For this program I will purchase a bag or two of ice, and will use the ice bath to lower the temperatures. For all other operations I can run normally on ambient air cooling. I love it, and expect that I can squeeze more speed from the processor by using this tactic.

you would probably gain alot of efficiency by mounting the rad directly to the fan on your hyper......and of cource a cpu waterblock would be even better....but +1 for cool setup...pun intended wink.gif

Kind of like an air conditioning. Nice.

Wow I agree that setup would benefit from a water-block. I have a old one laying around and when I get around to building a new system i may use your idea.

I was looking for a while at your pics, trying to figure out how you got the tubing connected to the heatsink..... then I realized you don't. Took me awhile to figure out, but I got it now biggrin.gif Put antifreeze in your lines, and drop a bag of dry ice in the cooler thumb.gif
