Review HTPC build for my mom!

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm sure some of you may remember a thread I started a while ago
about building a HTPC for my mom. Well that thread ended up with me deciding
to just upgrade the ram in her existing computer i built for her using spare parts.
Long story short, it's just not cutting it anymore and I want to build a rig from scratch
for her so that it performs beautifully and has room to grow with her as well.

Here are the parts I have so far please feel free to leave input and reviews!

CPU- Sandy Celeron G530

MOBO- Biostar H61MGC

PSU- Seasonic SS-300TFX 300w 80+ Bronze

RAM- 2x2GB Samsung Green Low Profile 30nm

OPTICAL- Samsung 22x CD/DVD-RW

SSD- Recommend me one < $100
(May not even get an ssd as it really stretches my budget but I want to wow her)
If I don't get one I will use her old HDD instead.

GPU- Will have a spare 8500gt from her current rig but depending on the case,
I may not be able to use it in her new build. Depends if the Intel HD Graphics will
be enough for streaming video. That is ALL she will be using it for.
What do you guys think? Intel HD Good enough?

CASE- APEX DM-318 or APEX DM-387

With the optical drive I plan to use, will the 318 be able to fit the drive?
It looks like it only supports slim optical drives.

Also, to save money for the ssd, do you guys think the FLEX 275w PSU that comes
with either case is adequate for the build I am constructing for her?

Any feedback, tips, comments, reviews are welcome!
THANKS IN ADVANCE OCN! thumb.gif

SSD Mushkin Chronos 120GB 2.5IN SATA3 SandForce SF-2281 SS 89.99 shipped.

Although you might want to get an H67 board so you can use the SATA 6Gbps ports (i think they're like $10-$20 more than H61 boards)

Intel HD graphics is plenty for internet and video viewing.

Oh and i like the DM387 better

thanks for the input +rep
thats not a bad price for that ssd.
especially for a 120gb.
also, nice catch on the h67 but i dont think i could stretch the additional ~$25
It will definitely be a consideration of mine though!
also, do you think that the 275W psu that comes with the dm387 is good enough?
this is a pretty low powered rig as you can tell but what do you think?

275W will be plenty.

im sure there's enough wattage but im just not sure as to the quality of
the included power supply that comes with the dm387.
If i use the stock PSU, I should be able to get a nice ssd for her.
if not, I will have to use those funds on the seasonic 300w
thanks for the input though + rep

I can't speak for the PSU quality...but the real kicker is the fact that it doesn't use an ATX PSU. It uses however a server PSU (Flex ATX). which can be expensive and hard to find a quality one

honestly though most cases that come with PSU's are iffy. they'll either work real good or quit after a month. i would take a chance on the dm387 since its cheap (Assuming that your mother has a decent surge protector. if not get a single outlet one from mono price...they're like $4)

I'd still go with a Llano/SSD build for a mom build.

I built my mom a SB-based machine, then build a Llano HTPC on mini-ITX. I preferred the AMD machine out of the two, better graphics and when it comes down to it, mom machines need graphics over compute power.

Oh and the Crucial M4 128GB is on Newegg for $99 after code:

i already put the order through though as it seemed the thread died quickly.
thankfully my mother is extremely unsaavy when it comes to computers so
I know for sure she will ONLY be streaming video.
Let's put it this way, she only knows how to press the ON button,
wait for the screen to load, double click on the icon that says "movies" on the desktop,
(which is just a shortcut to the browser who's homepage is the streaming website)
and then choose the movie she wants to watch.
She couldn't even navigate a web browser otherwise thumb.gif

thoses apex case are budget but really well mad,e as you can see in my sig i have one for my htpc and i LOVE it. I made it with an amd liano and it's wonderfull. I just changed the exhaust fan for a silent one( i want my htpc to be dead silent). I run this build for couple months, playing 1080p movies all the time and some diablo3 ^^''

Great build. Hope you'll have some pleasure building it hehe

Never built in a media case before so I'm sure it will be fun biggrin.gif
Question on the case you got, how has the PSU been holding up on you?
Is it hot at all? Any noise?
I want to know this because I bought a flex atx seasonic unit to replace the one
that came in the case but it could have saved me 45 bucks if I hadn't.
I just wanted to make sure that the unit would be completely reliable for her
but 45 bucks out of 230 spent is alot of money.
Ahhh i shouldn't cheap out now, better safe then sorry right?
thanks for the comments! thumb.gif +rep
