3820 Rig Random Freezing Help PLEASE

Thread Starter
Basically my whole computer will randomly crash with the sound looping.

I've tried drivers 12.4 and 12.3 (with a driver cleaner run each time) without much success. The system is not over-clocked, but I tried manually setting the ram to stock voltages, in addition to running a mem test run and coming up with no errors.

I have literally no idea what could be causing this. At this point I am thinking it might be an issue with either the M4 SSD or the ATI Drivers. The two 6950's were used in a previous computer too without any problems.

Earlier, I lost a hardcore diablo 3 monk that was level 34. I have been testing out BF3 and found that it happend twice at the end of the game during the loading screen at the end of the match (the point where it would be loading the next map). But then again, it also locked up on me about a month ago when I was writing my thesis.

Any help would be appreciated...

What system did you have the HD 6950's in before ?

Maybe it wasn't pushing them hard enough and now eventually one of them is showing it is not 100% stable.

This is assuming you get the crashes while playing games and not when just browsing the internet or even idling.

do you have any other GPU's laying around? if you do try swapping it
after that Start by trying to isolate every product. if all fails try a fresh install of windows.

and if that doesn't work its leaves 2 last suspects either your mobo or your cpu.

I got a crash when I was doing nothing but using word and watching youtube videos.

Is there a program that can text the SSD for errors?

I just uninstalled diablo 3 from the SSD and put it on my HDD to see if it crashes again.

Ok here is the smart data from the drive. SSDLife doesn't show anything being wrong with it.

I wish I knew how to read your SSD's S.M.A.R.T. values, it seems each SSD maker has slightly different SSD parameters. That Factory Bad Block Count RAW value of 54 might or not be of interest to troubleshoot the problem, perhaps if you ask in the Crucial forums what the S.M.A.R.T. data for that SSD is telling us. Maybe our Storage editor - Sean Webster - knows something about it. You can try sending him a PM for him to come to this thread.

Oh, I just remembered something: I had a BSOD for the first time in years after upgrading to the X79 platform when I was watching a youtube video. I still managed to read part of the BSOD error message and the problem was iastor.sys, which has to do with the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Enterprise drivers. I then upgraded to the latest version, and although I didn't get any other BSOD's, I did uninstall them and installed Microsoft's generic AHCI drivers because Intel's drivers don't let my SSD / HDD programs access the S.M.A.R.T. data or run the Intel SSD Optimizer, and I'm now planning on manually installing Intel's RST drivers, which, although Intel says are not supported, seem to work and perform better).

What storage drivers are you using ?

All of my drivers are the latest ones downloaded straight from the website. I remember reading up on it and thinking that was the problem but it didn't fix it.

However, I think I may have discovered what the problem was and I think it is related to my Xonar STX and a faulty molex extender.

I rearranged some wires so it is now connected directly to the PSU and not through a molex extender. Now that I think about it, every time my computer crashed I was listening to sound and it would always loop the sound when it crashed.

I already played some BF3 and it hasn't crashed so far, hopefully with the more stable power connection it wont happen anymore. I almost though I would be stuck with on board audio for a minute.

Alright so I just thought I would update this thread.

The faulty molex power adapter may have contributed but I ended up getting a freeze after I rearranged the wires. But I did some research and found this website. These are custom drivers that work on my Xonar Essance STX and other cards that fix a lot of bugs in the official drivers. I found a lot of threads with people describing the exact same problem I was having and the only person who said he never had problems was using these drivers.

So far I've played Diablo 3 all afternoon yesterday and had the game open for about 4 hours straight with no freezes. So these custom drivers seemed to have done the trick.

It really is sad though that Asus has such poor driver support for their most high end sound card. I mean they haven't updated the drivers for over two years yet these guys on the linked website have obviously found bugs to fix and improvements to make in their unified driver set. This freezing problem was definitely caused by the Xonar card, its a common problem somehow related to GX mode. The weird thing is that I never used GX to begin with, but these custom drivers have it disabled by default. It's a nice piece of hardware but this whole experience makes me want to reconsider ever buying an Asus card again.

Thanks for sharing, I'm glad you got it sorted out!

I think I also read something about the sound drivers for the Rampage IV Formula, which was one of the factors that drove me away from it (the other being that it only has 4 DIMM slots). It truly is a bit difficult to make the case for a dedicated sound card when you have such problems and no support from the maker. You and most people surely also remember when Creative also didn't fix their drivers a few years ago and the community did it for them and they didn't even like that!

You could say that the fact that Realtek dominates the sound codec market (and to my knowledge, with almost no known driver problems, at least I haven't had any in years) makes it hard for sound card makers to have the return in the investment to compensate for continued driver improvement. On the other hand, if they don't do it, they set themselves to not be taken seriously, and so people have to think twice before buying a dedicated sound card. It's like, they have to be really commited to making a well performing card, otherwise they can't enter the market properly.
