Mixing DDR2 6400 ram that has 4-4-4-15 1T timings (OCZ) which is no longer sold for a cheap price...

Hey guys, I currently have 2GB of PC2 6400 OCZ ram in my old AMD 4600+ System with a Foxconn 590Sli Motherboard.

Here's the ram:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227198

I wanted to increase the ram to 6GB, so I can install Windows 7 64bit on the system.

I found 4GB of this G.Skill ram to mix with the OCZ....
I think it's the the closest match with Cas Latency and timings:

Is this a good choice? Thank you for the help! thumb.gif

What ram would be a better mix from Newegg?

In theory all RAM should play nice together but reality has shown this to be untrue. Mixing of RAM is always a crapshoot, but you can give it a try...

Contrary to subjective opinions, actual testing of DDR2 RAMS indicates it may be slightly easier to mix than DDR3 RAM because DDR3 runs at a higher frequency and thus is more temperamental than lower frequency RAM that has more chance of mixing success -- but NOT mixing of RAM is the preferred set-up.

The best RAM to try adding it a match of what you currently have. If that is not possible the next option would be RAM of the same brand, frequency, voltage and RAM latencies.

So if the ram I currently have is:

2GB of...
DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Cas Latency: 4
Timing: 4-4-4-15 1T
Voltage: 2.1V
[ link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227198 ]

and I want to add 4GB of...
DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Cas Latency: 4
Timing: 4-4-4-12
Voltage: 2.0-2.1V
[ link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231148 ]

For a total of 6GB.

Is this a great match or can you guys find a better one? Thank you for the help!smile.gif

The rated voltage, speeds and timings should ideally be exactly the same.  You might just wish to go for a full replacement of your 2GB DIMM seeing as most people will not use over 4GB of RAM (you up to now weren't even using over 2GB), it is hard to find a kit specced the same in a world where DDR2 is the previous generation and expensive, and the final setup will have 3 DIMMs (i.e. single channel) and not be as optimal anyway.

No RAM platform/generation is "easier to mix" than another.

I would just but a full new set of ram. It means it all looks the same, and runs the same. Mean there is absolutely no problems. Otherwise, you really are rolling the dice...

^^^ I think the issue is that DDR2 RAM is still pricey for many folks compared to DDR3 RAM which is dirt-cheap right now due to over-production and insufficient demand.

Price varies obviously but I agree one RAM kit is the best choice if affordable for the OP.
