Need some advice HTPC with 2*Corsair H70

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, I am in need of some OCN advice smile.gif

I am going going to build a HTPC / gaming pc for my brother in law and am going to use the following items:
- Silverstone LC17
- ASUS full ATX mobo
- AMD FX4100
- 2*2GB RAM
- MSI reference HD6950
- Cooler Master 720W modular PSU
- bluray burner
- 2 * Corsair H70 watercooler

So what I would like some ideas with is the following.

This is the case:

emptylc175mv.jpg

The I am wondering how to setup the double Corsair H70 setup. And maybe add cooling fans non stock in the case.

They will have to be in the spot of the right and partly left HDD cage. I am going to use only 1 HDD and maybe a SSD and only the bluray burner. So I can put the HDD in the spot of where the other dvd player could be and there is always room for a SSD somewhere.

Why 2* H70? I want to use one for the gfx card gpu.

Due to the issues of space I was thinking about the following: create an air tunnel. Put the two H70s on top of eachother. A 12cm hole in the bottom and the top. And let it suck air through the top or bottom and out the other way around. Let the 3 or 4 fans do the pushing and pulling. So the air doesn't actually end up in the case warm or hot and it doesn't use hot air to cool the radiators either. Do you guys recon this could work? I am kinda affraid for the fact it is two rads in a row and the fact want to use a dustfilter on the intake side because the rads might otherwise get full of dust.

Next to that I am putting 2 92mm zalman fans in the spots at the front (air intake). There are 2 80mm fans on the back (outlet). There is room for another 80mm fan on the side (intake) and I am wondering wether I should add another 12cm fan in the top above the mainbord somewhere or gfx card to suck out hot air.

Can you guys please comment on these ideas and maybe add your own different ideas? thumb.gif

youll deffo have to locate two free areas that will allow modifications
for the 120mm fans. the case height is only 170mm, leaving 1/2' top
and bottom of 120mm fan. and real estate inside looks to be at a premiium.
opening up the front 80/92 mm holes looks to be the only safe palce, but the
spacing doesnt look good for two 120mm..
or maybe the GPU on the front bulkhead and the CPU on the location ablove
motherboard.. good luck..

What about the airtunnel idea? Will it work / provide decent cooling?

I actually have my server in that case, and it was formerly the home for my HTPC.

It's an interesting idea. The most thermally efficient design would be to have the cool air coming from the bottom and out of the top (since heat rises).

There are a couple issues with what you've proposed, though. First off, that case is a lot tighter than it looks. A 6950 will stretch very near to the front of the case (I'll check on mine in the AM to see exactly how close). This will limit where you're able to mount the H70s, both from where they'll fit and how far the tubes will reach. Also, your PSU will be spitting wires directly towards the outermost 92mm fan bay which may limit what you can put there (depending on your PSU). However, the largest issue is how to achieve enough static pressure to push cool air through stacked radiators. I don't know how possible or practical it would be, but I do foresee that being a potential issue.

I don't want to sound all doom and gloom, but you should definitely take these things into account! Some of the members in OCN's Watercooling forum might be able to offer you a bit of insight into the stacked radiator idea, and the rest of the stuff is just meticulous measurement. wink.gif

Good luck and keep us updated! thumb.gif

Won't fit on the gfx card.ubless you have it just sitting there, and i very much doubt you wil be able to get 2 h70's in there let alone one without some serious case mods.
Although if you do manage PM me.
good luck!

Yeah I also was struggling with the idea of the lentgh of both the hoses and the hd6950. It is those two together that cause the issues.

About the air pressure. I think if I can get at least 3 fans on tha rads (bottom, between and on top). I should be able to get some airflow going. And like you said from bottom to top. This would mean two new holes in the cae as modification goes.

Are you guys saysing I shouldn't do it? Or I should go for it and make everyone go: hmmmmmm how did he do that? biggrin.gif

I am using a modular psu so les wiring and flatter wiring.

I just emptied all the old crappy parts from the case (say hello to mr IDE). The previous owner literally glued the cpu to the heatsink. I needed for only to get to the cpu itself and just pull the lid off the cpu. Hahaha I threw it all in the bin except for 3 pci cards and a 80mm fan.

I will do a mockup soon so I can show how tight the fit is and what options I have. But untill then please feed me with ideas.

If you can do a mockup and you determine that it will fit, no one here will stop you! tongue.gif I'd just make sure it WILL work before mutilating the case. wink.gif

Also, make sure to cool the VRAM on the 6950.
