Nice suggestion. I do not need backward compatibility however, since I already have a PS2 Slim, and have no plan to ditch it. I'm looking at PS3 Slim right now, since its power consumption is cut by half against PS3 fat.
PS2 controllers do not work with the PS3 unless you have the dongle to go from PS2 to USB. Other then that I think it should work just fine. I would check to see how hot it would get and if it need a TIM replacement.

Eh Speaking just from my personal opinion.

Now is probably as good a time as any to jump on the PS3 train.

You can get a 60gb PS3 from Gamestop for 220$ which is a pretty great price if you want backwards compatibility.

While it may not be great by PC standards 200$ is a great price for what you get. I use my ps3 for streaming netflix and all kinds of other movies. It's the best set top box you can find with blu-ray, games and over all it's a really great buy.

In fact, I'm at my girlfriends house right now with her waiting on hers to arrive. The price on a refurb unit is more than reasonable and it's been out long enough that there are a plethora of cheap games you can get which are high quality.

Including, but not limited to inFamous, Infamous 2, Little Big Planet, Resistance series, God of War, so on and so forth.

The graphics are dated I admit but, it is still less than the cost of a single mid-ranged GPU these days.

The price may drop sooner or later but, there is always something around the corner which could result in a price drop.

Ps3 is great, don't get the fat one, I got a refurbed fat model and it crapped out on me. Get the slim, you don't need that much space just get the 160gb, then play:

Demon's Souls
Heavy Rain
MGS 4
Uncharted 2 and 3.
God of War 3.

Games like Uncharted 2 and 3 and god of war 3 look spectacular. Heavy Rain is not to be missed either.

Although an even slimmer model had pics leaked recently, so a price drop and newer model is probably just around the corner.
