Help with overclocking? Q8300

Hello, I'm new to overclocking and frankly I'm not sure what I'm doing, I understand the basics, and I've read some guides, but nothing has really helped me so I thought maybe someone might be able to help shed some light on my specific setup. I'm not technical illiterate, I just simply don't have experience in overclocking.

I'm attempting to simply get the chip to 3.0GHz which I've read countless times is not a challenging feat besides the fact that I can't get mine passed 2.86GHz using the preset rather than manual because anything I do manual doesn't even get past POST.

Specs:

CPU: C2Q Q8300
RAM: 8GB DDR3 @ 1333MHz Kingston HyperX
GPU: ATI Radeon 6850 1GB
Mobo: ASUS P5G41T-M LX Plus
PSU: 550W Antec 80+ Certified

Maybe someone has some experience with the same setup? I've read elsewhere that the motherboard is the reason I can't get to the desired speed.

G41 boards are very limited in the overclocking department. You're going to want a P45 board to get the most out of that chip thumb.gif

As I stated in the post I have it set to the automatic setting due to my manual settings not even getting past POST. Temperatures have been under 60'C on full load, under around 35'C idle. I was more so looking for help on manual settings, currently the automatic settings (15%) sets it to 381.7 FSB, 1.288 core voltage. Which equates to 2.86GHz from 2.5GHz, trying to get 3.0GHz.

Sorry for the possibly useless information response, as I said I really have no idea what I'm talking about when it comes to this subject of computing, so if you could break down even more specifically what you need/want I can give you that information.

G41 will be lucky to get past 400MHz FSB. Some don't even have BIOS settings for NB voltage.

You'll need to read guides and use manual settings, but a Q9550 on a G41 is like putting a Ferrrari on bicycle tires.

I see, well this is an upper end G41 board if I'm not mistaken and I do have all those options, but I can't get the settings right for it to boot @ 400FSB. So can anyone attempt to give me some settings to try or anything?

As was previously stated, G41 doesn't deal with overclocking very well; regardless of the brand or model. You'll need a different chipset if you want to squeeze as much juice out of that chip as possible.
