I swore off of PC for a while...but now Planetside 2 is coming out and I'm looking at another build for gaming. I've built several mid-tower rigs before with no issues, but I've never actually had to worry about space before either. I know I don't want a monstrous full tower like my last build, and there's a strong possibility I'll be bouncing around a lot within the next 6 months to 1 year so I started looking at ITX for a more portable gaming option. I'm aiming for a budget of roughly $1,000. Also, given that I'm cold-blooded and hate AC, my apartment/room/wherever I'm staying is generally around 70-75 degrees inside - NOT the coolest environment for a compact gaming PC. Anyway, all that being said....here's what I'm looking at so far.
============================================================================================
Mini-ITX build:
ASRock Z77E-ITX LGA 1155 Intel Z77 - $149.99
Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz - $239.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 1600 - $46.99
Subtotal for Mobo, CPU, Memory - $436.97
- Case:
Either Lian-Li - PC-Q08B ($109.99) or PC-Q18B ($159.99) - or this Silverstone SG07-B (184.99, but comes with a 600w PSU)
- Graphics:
Gigabyte GV-N670OC-2GD GeForce GTX 670 - $399.99 Lengthwise it should be fine in either case, but I'm not sure about width-wise, apparently stuff gets pretty tight in there and I don't know about any potential heat issues as well (hence my reasoning for choosing those two Lian-Li cases - large intake fans in the front, and the Silverstone has a 180mm).
- PSU:
SeaSonic M12II 620W or the PCPCS - $89.99
Subtotals:
PC-Q08B + 670 + PSU - $599.97
PC-Q18B + 670 + PSU - $649.97
SG-07B + 670 + no PSU - $544.98
Haven't decided on a hard drive or optical drive yet. The Silverstone case requires a slim, the others can accommodate a full size but I'm thinking about just buying a slim drive in any case as it'll likely rarely if ever be used other than to install Windows...which can be done through USB anyway. I'm really leaning toward the Silverstone case as I like how the video card has the entire side for ventilation and the top fan takes care of the mobo, but then again the Lian-Lis have some pretty sweet builds I've seen on here and people haven't seemed to have had any trouble with the card being on the bottom of the case. I'm not planning on watercooling if I can avoid it to cut costs, so keeping the case relatively cool IS important to me, but keeping it quiet is important as well.
============================================================================================
Alternatively, this is my Micro-ATX build for a slightly bigger but still compact and probably cooler (temperature-wise) build:
Micro-ATX build:
SilverStone Temjin Series TJ08B-E - $97.99
Western Digital WD5002AALX 500GB - $99.99
LITE-ON Black SATA DVD-ROM Drive - $18.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 1600 - $46.99
Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz - $239.99
GIGABYTE GA-Z77M-D3H LGA 1155 Intel Z77 - $114.99
Gigabyte GV-N670OC-2GD GeForce GTX 670 2 gb - $399.99
SeaSonic M12II 620W or the PCPCS - $89.99
Total : $1108.92
============================================================================================

Honestly, this is simple. Get a Bit-Fenix Prodigy case. Build your comp around that case alone.

Awesome. I'm looking at building a similar rig, and was worried about the stock PSU.

Not to hijack the thread, but how would this setup with a 580 GTX, and Corsair H80 work with this much power?

/\ This. At least, according to Newegg's wattage calculator. I should be coming out around just over 400w and some change, like around 415 or so. With a Micro-ATX build instead I'd be closer to 500w, but still well under 600w. Honestly that power supply is another big reason I really like the SG07 case. I've been doing some reading on Tom's Hardware about top down vs tower CPU coolers, and while so far myself and others in this thread have been of the top-down mindset - I now wonder about air flow direction and pressure.

See this article here for reference, but according to TH:

Drawbacks

• Counters convection
• Air flow is determined by size/position of case openings
• Counteracts the cooling performance of downward-facing processor coolers
• Graphics cards with DHE (direct heat exhaust) can partly counter the overpressure

I'm wondering if I shouldn't be looking for a smaller tower style cooler that can better direct airflow to the side of the case than a top down to just flow over the mobo. Considering the fact that the video card will be completely blocking one side of the case's vents, and the video card has a self contained blower style cooling system, and there's no rear ventilation for this case...it seems to me that placing a tower CPU cooler with a fan directing airflow out the side would significantly improve cooling.

edit - this one in particular seems like it would work well with the SG07 given the 180mm case fan directly above the CPU. Not sure on fit, but something along these lines...

Again, not really blown away by them. They're much bulkier and larger than what I need. My last build was a full tower with pretty much the same equipment (as far as number of parts/slots) as this build I'm planning. I want to go compact portable, not carrying handle portable.

An overclocked 3570K and 580 would not need more than a solid 500w PSU. You could probably even get away with some of the more solid 450w power supplies. I say solid, because most power supply makers (rebadgers), sell crappy, mediocre, and very good power supplies.

Don't know about the Corsair H80 but from everything else I've read/heard a 580 is nothing in this case. Setup would work just fine, and you could actually go even smaller if you wanted to.

Exactly. The 580 only uses ~50w more (195 vs 244 TDP) and as mentioned above, you'd have nothing to worry about.

I would stay away from the Lian Li PC-Q18B case I bought this case along with the PC-Q08B case and the only thing you really get on the Q18B is a top exhaust 140mm fan vs 120mm on the Q08B and the Hard drive bays slots are better. Other than that not worth the extra money in my opinion that's why I sent it back to newegg last week and received back $175 total and kept the Q08B case. I am planning on doing a build log for it soon... Going to chop the case up and add a 140mm rad to top and another the front like pictured below...

My plan for the case in general.. Lian Li PC-Q08B pictured below..

First post edited to show current build choices. I think I'm set on ITX now that I know it can handle what I want, even if it does cost me a bit more. I'll sell off a rifle scope or something and that should pay for this whole build biggrin.gif. Anyone want a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 + Burris PEPR mount? Only about 200-300 rounds through the rifle it was mounted on....still in perfect condition! lol.

Any thoughts on that Zalman CPU cooler? It's a bit more than I wanted to spend, but much cheaper than the $70-$80 other suggestions (though they WERE sexy...). I'm also not sure on the height of it - it says 85 x 112 x 125mm and according to the Silverstone, their "Ample space for CPU cooling (117mm in height)" doesn't quite seem enough. How much would it affect performance to maybe shave those fins a bit?

edit #2 - I don't think that Zalman will fit one way or another. So it's either a horizontally mounted low profile cooler (which now that I really think about it, seems kinda weird because the air from the 180mm would be fighting against the air from the CPU fan...) or just keep the stock one but add a case fan on the side. To those who already own an SG07 - is there even room on the right side of the case for say, a 120mm just to direct exhaust out the side a little better? Maybe 2? I'd imagine running them at minimal speed would be sufficient to direct airflow without noticeably increasing noise.

edit #3 - Ordering through Amazon saves me about $30. However, they're sold out of the SG08, and don't carry the SG07 USB 3.0. Bleh. That other place wants $24 to ship to me. Brings it to the same price as the SG08 with free shipping from Amazon. *sigh* choices, choices...

OP,

why the SG 07? So Ugly ! puke.gif

I just built a nice rig with the SG 08 (successor to the SG 07), Great airflow, looks a hell of a lot nicer (very premium look) and has a few small improvements. Definitely worth the extra $

http://www.silverstonetek.com/product.php?pid=317

You can also take out the beastly case fan if you like and mount a corsair water cooler onto the cpu if needed.

PS: optical disc drives are obsolete now ;-) I didnt bother installing one, if i need to install an OS or anything just mount the DVD ISO to USB and run it from there. Just make sure you do it from the rear 2.0 ports (USB 3.0 drivers arent native to the windows installation).
