FX-8120 issues

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I hope I have the correct section here! I finished building my new rig last week, these are the specs;

FX-8120 8 core
Mobo - Msi 970a-g45
850W Powercool PSU
HD5750 (Want to upgrade to the 6950 or 70 at a later date)
1.5TB HDD
8GB DDR3

My issue is this, after flashing my motherboard to recognise the new FX Processors, my computer powers off as if the powercable has been pulled out when I start either Windows or Ubuntu (Times are random, either as soon as the desktop appears or after 10 minutes). The only way I can start it back up is if I switch the PSU switch to off, take the cable out, wait for my case LED's to stop flashing, then plug it back in and turn the switch back on. I originally thought maybe it was an overheating issue, but the temperature ranges around 30-35 degrees celcius on idle and no more, so that can't be the issue.

This is the second processor I've had, I took the original one back as I thought it was faulty (Exact same issues) they ran prime95 on it but it failed. It really bugged me when I got a replacement to find out I'm having the same issues.

Just a note, I always used an antistic wrist strap when building.

Any ideas guys? I'm pretty stumped right now (And sick of using a single core sempron)

Hi. It is possible that your mobo's VRMs are causing trouble. This particular mobo is known for VRM problems with high-power CPUs (yours is 125W), although it is much better than other MSI mobos for AMD.
The mobo does not have VRM protection (shutdown or so) so that's not the reason for the powerdown.
It could, however, be feeding the wrong voltage to the CPU (but not continuously, so checking in CPUz or any other monitor is useless) causing the CPU to shut down.

Another theory - it could be the PSU. First of all, I've never heard of Powercool, although if it's labeled 850W, there should be AT LEAST 400W juice in it, which should be enough for your rig. BUT you could be getting wrong voltages from the wall, or the PSU may be faulty, feeding wrong voltages to the mobo, or the OCP (if it has any) may trigger for no reason, causing the powerdown.

Those are just the things off the top of my head to get you started smile.gif That is:

1. mobo VRM issue
2. insufficien juice from non-branded PSU
3. wrong voltage from the wall
4. sensitive PSU protection

Good luck! thumb.gif

My money is on this - had a very similar problem with an AX850 and 1100T on CHV.
Replacement PSU fixed it.

This is my PSU

If I remember correctly the CPU was taking around 1.49 volts. I don't know if this is correct as I know nothing about overclocking, so i've never really checked the voltages before. If I remember correctly I think the voltages went up to 1.57 when I was checking the BIOS a couple of days ago.

Could you recommend any PSU's for me please? I'm not bothered about modular or non modular. Is this one ok?

The CM GX series are an average quality PSU. In theory should be ok but I would probably look at the Corsair TX series if you're not worried about modular.
I don't know about your location but here in Australia they're fairly similarly priced (maybe a few $ more for the Corsair).
The other thing is that if your max upgrade on graphics is to a 6970, a good quality 650W PSU should suffice (as long as you're not crazy overclocking the 8150).
Maybe you could go down in size and up in quality??

It's an FX-8120 biggrin.gif Overclocking it, I might play around with it, but to be honest I don't really know what to do, I don't know what the safe "margins" are, voltage wise. Temperature's I know what's good / bad.
Would a 700W be perfect? If so I could go down in size but up in quality smile.gif

Something like this maybe.

hello,
you have far to much voltage,at stock should be down around 1.34v~1.31v
go in the bios, tell it to go optimal and then turn off all the extra's
by extra's i mean cool and quite,c1e,c6 state and the turbo core.
manual the voltage if you need to.
mine will stall with that higher voltage too.

Ok thanks, i'll test it soon! What could be the cause of the voltage going so high?

Ok, I'm running the 8core now. When checking the voltages before disabling everything they went from 1.33~ straight upto to 1.48~. I disabled everything and it seemed to stick bang on 1.34, 1.35. The idle temperatures are 34 degrees, though the fan is making A LOT of noise, as usual.

Edit - 28 degrees idle now, wow.

I want to load up Arma 2 (dayz mod) to see what happens, do you guys recommend this?

2nrhaw4.png

Edit - Loaded up speedfan, clicked automatic fan speed, still on 100%. I took the fan speed down to 40%, currently on 32 degrees idle, seems ok.

Time is 22:16 - Still going strong! biggrin.gif
