Alienware M17x Upgrade!

Thread Starter
Hi Everyone,

As you can see from below, my main 'rig' so to speak is the Alienware M17x. That time of year has come again to look at upgrading, or selling and replacing - so that's where everyone else comes in and why I'm here for a little help because lately I really haven't kept up-to-date with the latest goings on!!

I will say I already have a desktop, and he rarely gets utilised so no one tell me to build my own desktop!!!

So - the first thing I would upgrade is the hard drive - I've seen a couple of SSDs drop in price so I think that would deliver the largest speed boost. But what does everyone think of the Gfx cards and CPU - are they worth the upgrade, and if so with what and is it possible??

Any help appreciated everyone!!

Gaz

I didn't think it was possible to upgrade the CPU or GPU in a laptop, but if it is, go for a CPU upgrade!

I personally would look into a newer laptop. The CPU and GPUs are quite dated.

Unfortunately laptop CPUs and GPUs aren't upgradable so your best bet is a new laptop...can't see specs currently so I'm assuming hardware is dated

Yea I could see upgrading the hard drive and memory in a laptop no problem. But once you start talking main components like processor and graphics card, built specifically for that laptop and motherboard...you're not going to be able to just swap them out really. Might just be looking at time to upgrade the laptop as a whole, time for the latest gen M17x.

Upgrading the CPU and GPU on that laptop is possible but like so you have to stick to the same socket CPU upgrade, possibly going for a faster CPU. The GPU is upgradable, you just have to locate a better GPU via MXM graphics card. I was crazy about laptops before I started building desktops, so yes some laptops are possible to upgrade and even modified to a certain extent.

But like laptops, they are more expensive to upgrade most of the time than desktops.

*Edit - Most gaming laptops have MXM graphics cards, so majority of their GPU's is very upgradable, and all laptops are CPU upgradable from what I've experience, just get the correct socket cpu for your laptop.

- Your M17 alienware has 2 x MXM graphics card slots built into it, so you can run SLi or Crossfire setups on that laptop.

Like some people have said most laptops do not allow you to upgrade the cpu or the gpu. But this one does. It is possible but the parts wold be extremely expensive.

920XM CPU http://www.ebay.com/itm/INTEL-i7-920XM-3-2GHz-quad-QS-mobile-CPU-processor-for-55-chipset-laptop-monkey-/130682045632?pt=CPUs&hash=item1e6d41c4c0

6970/6990m I really can't give you a link to the videocards on ebay because I am assuming that you want to upgrade both, just look for what ever gpu's that work are defiantly 6970/6990

Wrong...

To the OP:

Lots of people upgrade Alienware laptops... they seem to have the most spare parts available. I read a lot on Notebook Review, you might want tot ake a peak in the alienware sub-forum for your laptop model for info. Alienwares laptops seem to be the most upgradeable GPU wise over most laptop manufacturers. They seem to have good compatibility, and availability. For some reason alienware is more tolerant of newer gen gpus, as long as they're the same socket and of the same wattage/heat rating. Even over sager/clevo, as they stop bios support at product EOL, which effectively kills gpu upgrades past same gen GPUs, in most cases anyways. It seems that clevo writes support into the bios for cards, or something of that nature. Nothing is guaranteed though, so you have to do your homework.

The first thing you need to do, is figure out if your laptop is MXM 3.0 or not, which, I would bet, it is. And the socket of your current laptop (use something like CPU-Z to determine). So you should be able to put a couple of 5870s in there at the very least. Maybe even more if they are within the correct range for your laptops cooling/power capability.

I don't know why the guy above me went to an extreme cpu, I am sure you can find a slightly cheaper quad for that socket laptop of yours. I wouldn't go nuts, the GPUs will probably still be your limiting factor, but you definitely want to make sure you get some decent horsepower. Before springing for the extreme cpu, I would make sure your alienware has the capability to overclock in the bios., otherwise you might be able to save some money on a lower end quad.

Now, all that being said, it generally isnt cheap. But you have a good base for a laptop. I would seriously consider the cost vs the performance gain before springing for anything though.

**EDIT** There is a guy on NBR who went from an M17X-R2 (which I would guess is what yours is) with crossfire 4870s to 6970s. That would be a hug upgrade. But My guess is, used a pair of those would be $700 or more.

Hope this helps in some way.

I would be worried to do that for long term though not sure if the motherboard can do that for a while but defiantly possible.
