CPU Choice Dilemma...

Thread Starter
In short if I'm able to sell my computer to a friend now, I'll be upgrading my motherboard, cpu, and ram.

My dilemma is; what to get? I do a fair share of video encoding with Adobe Premier and Handbrake.
From what I've looked up, you only get a 20-25% performance boost on the 6 more cpus over the quads like the 2600k and or 3770k.

Does anyone know if there is a possible 8 core coming out for the x79 chipset and will it be affordable? (~$600)
I've looked up benchmarks and it seems as though the 2600k and 3770k would be around twice as fast as what I have at 4.5ghz. and the 6 cores would be 2.5-3x as fast. (Can someone confirm?)

Basically I would like to get a really good motherboard and fairly good ram that does the job. (Not overpriced)
Then I would like to get the most cost effective cpu, and then maybe upgrade to an 8 core in the future if it looks to be a worthy upgrade.

Give me some ideas.
Thanks in advance!

tell us a bit what do you most in your computer , this way will be easy to give a list with a nice setup with low cost. one more thing why 8 cores?

I said above I do video encoding, but I also play games, but I don't expect to see much of an improvement in games.
8 cores as it will encode video faster, but maybe not worth it as it seems now.

Good luck seeing an SB-E chip for $600. Pretty sure they aren't releasing any octocore SB-E chips and even if they did, they would be pushing the $1200 mark.

To be honest, I'd just get a 3770k. You get 8 threads and with a bit of an overclock you should get all the performance you'll ever need.

If you really wanna go all out just get a 3930k and overclock it. Run it with 16GB of 2133MHz of G.Skill Ripjaw X memory for massive bandwidth and slap it all on a ASRock X79 Extreme4 motherboard thumb.gif

I say go with a AMD FX-8120 That thing is $180 dollars, but is only 17% slower then i7. You get 8 cores, higher clock speeds, bragging right of a eight core, and did I mention similar performance for half the cost?! Plus, for the price of a medium level 1155 (low end 2011) can be a high end motherboard! check out Asus's ROG Crossfire V Formula. Your rig does not mention a CPU Cooler, so I would almost say get your i7 and motherboard price, then split the difference and buy a serious, high-end cooler. On stock the 8120 was capable of over 4.5, imagine a custom water cooling loop (or high-end air)!

The difference being from what I've seen in benchmarks, the amd 8 core can't compare to intel's 4 core when it comes to video encoding. (The whole point of getting an 8-core.) I already have the fastest computer of anyone I know, so I really don't need more bragging rights. biggrin.gif

I went with 3930K so I could crunch the vid when I need. You really need to be prepared to deal with the heat though, that can't be understated.

Alot of the younger or less experienced clockers are used to seeing SB chips run 5.0 on air, and hexa-core SB-Es are not that animal. Even the IBs are not that animal.

If you're looking for a high-OC, and have the $$, go 3930K and custom waterloop.

Otherwise, I'd go 2600K with a high-OC, or IB spending some extra $$ on cooling.

Oh and yea if the Octos emerge, I'd expect them to be around $1000+ and throw immense amounts of heat.

True, but we could still expect one in a couple years that will be cheaper and work with the x79? Guess that's really hard to tell though, right?

CPU choice may not be what you need to improve handbrake speed.http://www.anandtech.com/show/5835/testing-opencl-accelerated-handbrakex264-with-amds-trinity-apu. Granted this is just a beta and who knows for sure when it will be available but it appears IMO that this is the future and OpenCL is maybe what you need to be considering.

Intel declared that IB-E will be X79 compatible. If you keep a platform for a long time a used 8-core may be a good option, but typically the top-tier CPUs for a retired chipset hold their value. Look at the 990X prices on ebay.
